I had this same idea a while ago but didn't have the time to do it.  Basically the same design, a motor inline to the drive shaft and the batteries in the frame.

I rode this electric Vision, owned by a Larry Studebaker.  He lives north of San Francisco.  I found his ev picture a few years back, and emailed him.  

I went up to his place, and he let me take the "ReVision" around the block.  It was a little top-heavy compared to my '82, but accelerated almost as fast!  He said it had a twenty mile range.
