On the '83 carb it appears that the fittings for the carb drains point at each other and give me the impression that these should be connected together.  It also appears that there should be another fitting point toward the ground on the front carb in addition to the one pointing toward the rear; mine has a nice screw instead.  Do these carbs need some kind of outlet or can they be plumbed together to close off the system?

The carb drains are plumbed together at the front carb and then there is a "T" fitting that runs down below the frame. If you have leakage from the overflow tubes, your float bowl needles are probably not seating correctly or your float height needs to be adjusted. Either way, don't cap off the overflow tubes as if you do, and they need to overflow, the fuel will end up in your crankcase oil.
