The only part I need to replace on the '82 I just bought is the signal switch because the outside knob broke off. The previous owner tried to glue a piece on to replace the knob, but just filled the switch with glue. I've taken the switch assembly off handlebar, taken switch apart and traced wires but they don't all seem to end at disconnects?? Can the signal switch itself be replaced or does the whole unit, hornm light switch, signal need to be replaced. I can't seem to find this in the manual?

Trust me.  Replace the entire unit with a used one.  Cheers.
