Well lets see how well I can do this story!

My V has 26000 miles on it, replaced one stator but never did the start clutch bolts. So I tackled it the last week or so ago!
Here are the bolts Night Vision sent me (I owe you man!)http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0204.jpgthe gaskets I bought http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0220.jpgHere's the box with the order of the bolts http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0183.jpg  Here is a picture getting the flywheel bolt started-did I have enough leverage??http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0208.jpg
Here pictures of the puller, the flywheel flew maybe two feet when it finally came off! For awhile there I never thought it was going to happen! http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0211.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0212.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0212.jpg  Pictures of the flywheel, key, starter clutch. http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0215.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0217.jpg The next pictures are the nut behind the fly wheel, it was finger loose and hard to find a tool to tighten it with! http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/DadsPictures4-20-07070.jpg http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0218.jpg  Now, AND YOU ALL PAY ATTENTION-here was my screw up, I DID NOT HAVE THE STUPID FLYWHEEL BOLT ON ALL THE WAY! It sure fooled me-seemed to be tight, my torque wrench showed 60 lbs-BUT I was still about 2 or 3 mm loose. You could not tell it was loose-at least not until I took it back off. Frankly the second time around I was worried I was going to strip it!! So if you do this and get sounds where the gears grind and you get a terrible noise-that bolt is not really all the way on yet and you are grinding off your case. You can see the grind about three o'clock in this picture. Thank goodness my engine did not want to run that day-I may have been asking someone for a new case! http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0261.jpg  There is a happy ending, drained my oil out today, took the cover off, tightened the bolt, an easy back on with the cometic gasket, oil back in, the V started right up, drove it to work and back!!  It was already dark when I took this last picture of my installed new luggage rack. Another saga completed in the story of keeping a healthy Vision on the road.http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0262.jpg

Here are some more pictures, some of which did not work the first time. Let me know if you have a question on any oif them.   http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0220.jpg  the gaskets   http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/DadsPictures4-20-07076.jpg flywheel off  http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/DadsPictures4-20-07068.jpg  how far the flywheel flew   http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/DadsPictures4-20-07077.jpg  ready to go back on-but I had to take it back off-notice no gupe needed on the cometic gasket  http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/DadsPictures4-20-07094.jpg finished product pictures after several days of running  http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/DadsPictures4-20-07095.jpg  http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/DadsPictures4-20-07096.jpg  Now I hope these all work this time!

Couldn't get this picture to work, bolts from NV http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0204.jpg

Another picture that didn't take, taking the flywheel nut http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s279/dadsvision/IMG_0208.jpg

Hope they all work now!

I thank my son Eric for helping me with this project!

:) Well done Don...problem solved, in more ways than one, eh :o ;D ;D :D :D :D :D... ;)

Great set of picture's...they take some of the mystery out of this part of the motor and the job at hand.

Good to know that you have got her all back together again and up-and-running...enjoy 8)

well put, I like that idea!

Don, glad to see everything worked out ok. Stator looks like it still has some life in it...
you didn't mention anything about the piece of the stater clutch... does it operate smoothly? doh.. pencil pointing to woodruff key, not piece of backing... read the words

only other thing I need to mention is I think you had the flywheel puller upside down. the flat side goes up so the bolts and washers are on a flat surface and don't slide.

guess it works both ways  :D

Oh boy, last merit badge I got as a boy scout was in Marksmanship and I was sort of a ringer for that one as I was already shooting on a small bore ROTC rifle team and in my senior year of high school finished eight in a field of about 200.

I see one picture does not work, darn!

I took well over double the pictures you have seen, some did not come out, some-well, I was so happy over getting this completed that I just had to post it at about midnight last night. However now I wish I had taken more time and done a better report. By the way a big thanks to Tiger and Lucky for the instructions they have previously posted (or from Lucky's site).

Well I'll be darned if I had the puller on upside down, I'll have to look at it-I borrowed it again thinking I may have pull it off again. Thanks NV.

I've always wanted to ask this question. Which of these bolts gets the little copper washer?

Of the four topmost bolts, the one second from the left gets the washer.  Should be able to tell by where the oil gallery is on the crankcase.

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

just bringing this to the top as there has been recent interest, most of the pictures are still good.

d0n

thanks for the pics.

the reason that some of your pics don't work is because you didn't leave any spaces between the URL address. You must have a space before and after the URL address of the pictures or it wil not work.

You can edit your original post and just add spaces around the URL addresses and then they'll all show.

Just thought I would bump this up, most of the pictures still work.

don_vanecek

Bump, Night Visions bolts show in a picture on my second reply (umm, not sure how to say that).

You were sure lucky if your flywheel came off soooo easy, I was afraid I was going to brake something before I got mine off!

Rick G

The first one that i did , I applied enough torque, I was afraid the centre bolt would strip. (I've used up 2 vibration damper pullers pulling Vision flywheels)  That's why I always suggest putting a box of rags underneath.  One would not come off, in spite of repeated hammer blows the the centre bolt, so I left it over night. Morning found the flywheel a foot from the box, it took me 30 minuets to find all the springs and rollers.
I also put an old , sacrificial socket on the centre bolt , to avoid muchrooming the centre bolt.

I just love the way the universe works.......  I've been thinking I really need to do mine as well, something to do with that CLUNK when it didn't quite fire up. Love the pictures, thankyou.

Point of difference - I'm going to put an XZ400 flywheel back in. Perks them up nicely apparently, will post and report when done.
