Looks like I'm in for Port Dover, Tiger--but meeting up with other visionaries will likely be by pure chance at a summer 13th--meet up at a Tim's outside? Say Simcoe at 9:00 am?

:) What one local news paper reported... 8).

PORT DOVERâ€"So this is what Hogtown really looks like.

Since 1981, every Friday the 13th has seen motorcyclists, first by the dozens and now by the thousands, converge on this little community on the shore of Lake Erie, which in its quieter moments lays claim to the world's largest freshwater fishing fleet.

Yesterday was the perfect day for riding â€" sunny and not too hot, with a gentle breeze off the water. But there was a constant rumble of thunder as what was expected to be an unprecedented number of bikers, most of them on brawny Harley-Davidson "hogs," rolled into town. At least two reportedly had come from as far away as Belgium.

By 8 a.m., organizers were saying the town, population 5,500, had never been so full so early and were predicting a record crowd â€" especially with "Born to be Wild" biker cult band Steppenwolf playing an afternoon concert in the park.

"We're figuring on 50,000 bikes and 150,000 people," said PD13 organizing committee president Keith Swarts. "That's if the town can take them. If not, the barriers will go up and we'll have to close the roads coming in."

By 9 a.m., the whole length of Main St. â€" just a couple of kilometres â€" had motorcycles parked along either side and down the middle. The whole of downtown was closed to four-wheeled traffic.

Everyone in town seemed to be making a buck, either selling T-shirts and water at sidewalk stands or renting out their yards for camping and parking.

A few townspeople would rather the bikers went elsewhere but no one wanted to say so. "They've been coming for 26 years and they're going to keep coming," said Sheila Chambers. "So I'd rather do it this way with the extra organization and washrooms. It's well-run. No one comes here for trouble."

PD13 spent $16,000 on porta-potties, Swarts said, and paid the local Rotary club $3,000 to park bikes while keeping lanes open for emergency vehicles. "There isn't a charitable organization in Norfolk County that isn't here and raising money," he said.

Dennis Travale, Simcoe-based mayor of the county, concedes not everyone relishes the day. "Some businesses must close. ... Some residents just like having that small lakeside town atmosphere. For a couple of days, that disappears. But by next morning, the bulk of litter and trash is cleaned up."

As bikes continued to roar into Port Dover right through the evening, the spectacle was difficult to absorb, a kaleidoscope of chrome, bright paint, black leather and tattoos. There were dozens of clubs flying their colours: The Boozefighters, one of the first outlaw clubs, predating even the Hells Angels; Widow's Sons (Masonic bikers); Red Devils; Longriders of Montreal; Black Diamond Riders; Lords and Ladies of Lambeth; Perfect Pigs; Bikers Canada, "100 per cent abstinent ... Live to Ride, Ride for God;" American Legion Riders; Brother's Keepers, a firefighters' club; and the Hells Angels, with a big booth selling merchandise.

Police kept a low profile though Biker Enforcement Unit officers took photos of some of the Angels.

There were lineups for everything from gas to cash. Instant teller machines were running out of money. Hankering for a double-double? Better be ready to wait an hour at the town's only Tim Hortons.

By 1 p.m., it was hard to walk, let alone ride downtown.

A couple reportedly got married outside, the bride in white leathers. Another couple sat in an upstairs window, flourishing two pythons at the crowd. And, everywhere, metallic eye candy. A leavening of Japanese and European bikes but mostly heavy-hitter Harleys, some heavily customized. Once in a while, there'd be something that brought everyone to a standstill, like the tricycle with a Chevrolet V8 engine and the rear fenders from a 1957 Chevy. Someone with a sense of the ridiculous rode in on a motor scooter.

One guy showed up wearing nothing but boots, a horned Viking helmet and a thong. Not everyone was impressed. "He's riding a f-----g Honda!" someone yelled.

Former Quebecer Gaetan "Gator" Desrochers' Harley was anything but eye-catching. He now lives in Arizona and is visiting his old haunts. The bike is dirty and beat-up, with what looks like all Desrochers' worldly goods strapped to the back fender. The Arizona resident reckons he's put close to 150,000 kilometres on it since it was new four years ago.

It was his first time in Port Dover and he loved what he was seeing. "Except that statue they have on the dock to all the fishermen who drowned. You can't see it for porta-potties. That's wrong. Let's not forget those guys. They made this town."

A woman carried her toddler along the sidewalk, showing him the brightest bikes. A man-mountain with his arms sleeved in tattoos grinned at the little boy and said, "Gimme five, buddy."

The kid high-fived him, his wide eyes growing even wider. There's a biker born every minute.
