Would a rear cylinder head be interchangeable with the front one?  They appear to be the same.  Anyone know?

Hate to give this reply without confirmation but I would say no, the cam drives would be opposite.

I think the front head would be missing a hole for the rear cylinder engine mount.

Could get drilled and tapped I guess. It looks like a plug on the front cylinder.

The ONLY thing different is the cam chain tensioner location along with some other bits. Both are the same casting. Just machined slightly differently for the different tensioner location. BUT in desperation it can be made to work.
