Originally it was oil in the starter. Got everything nice and shiny in there, reassembled. No start. Disassemble.

Turns out, in my infinite wisdom, that I thought I was tightening down the lead to the bolt on the starter, I was just spinning the bolt around. Until the copper wiring was ripped off the brushes. Oops.  :-[  A bit of soldering magic later and now she starts up immediatly. Not even a full crank and she fires up, it's beautiful. Brings a tear of joy to my eye  ;D

oh the macs have been functional for a few weeks now, and boy do they sound great. gives a much nicer 'bark' when you open the throttle, and good throaty lowend when cruising. not too loud or annoying.
