TechTalk / Re: Starting problem
Last post by fret not - December 21, 2023, 06:02:49 PM
On one of my Visions I found corrosion in the heavy cable to the starter.  Maybe battery acid oozed/sprayed around at some time?
These bikes are a bit long in the tooth, so there are many things that could be aging / accumulating / happening.  THIS is the meat of the trip/process.  The older it becomes the more Zen.  Not yet the level of archeology, but still requiring some preventive maintenance/coddling/prayers/ and intellectual involvement.

Are you talking high resistance on the large wire coming from the battery to the solenoid? As long as the solenoid is energized the only way to lessen energy to the starter is with poor connections or cables from the battery to the solenoid and then from there to the starter. It sounds like you're saying the solenoid isn't being energized enough to pass electrical flow to the starter.
First place I would look for a problem would be the side stand switch.

TechTalk / Starting problem
Last post by Ron_McCoy - December 19, 2023, 12:04:06 PM
I was having starting problems, starter seemed to be laboring to crank engine over. I replaced the battery, but I was still not happy with how it started. I checked the resistance of the wire to the starter solenoid and it was 95 ohms, way too high. I jumped from the fuse box to the solenoid, bypassing all the safeties in the system, and it starts at the push of the button. I haven't found the source of the resistance yet, but it's never started like this even when it was new. Just push the stater button and it's running. Something to think about if you're having Vision starting problems.

General Board / An Aprilia with Vision specs.
Last post by jefferson - December 18, 2023, 09:23:42 PM
Always liked Supermoto and watched it on tv back when the ama was running the show. Even went out to Colorado and watched one of the races out there. Jeff Ward really impressed as did all the other riders. The Aprilia came out around that time that I saw run in Europe, but was outlawed here and I really like the thing as there was a 450 and 550 version. It was the prettiest of all the bikes running and is still a very good looking and running bike today. My nephew got a KTM 690 Supermoto R and it got me to watching videos and then alot of SXV550 stuff. I looked up the specs and was surprised to see  the bore and stroke is the same between the Vision and the Aprilia. V angle is wider on the Aprilia at 77 degrees. Horsepower is not that much different considering the much newer design with higher compression and EFI and of course weight. My racebike dynod at 57.5 so with frictional losses it should be right there with it. I think the claimed horsepower was 70 and I have seen several figures for the Aprilia and they were all right around there. Yamaha was a bit ahead of the curve with the Vision.

Just looking around and found this thread.  How about replacing the exhaust with a "custom" version like one of the available models?  The big issue is availability of original mufflers etc.  Many have been rusted out and many more have been mashed, dented, and bent.  Nice if you can find one, but there are other worthy systems that you can buy today.  Some spendy but rather nice ones available from Australia (ask POD).  GOOGLE search for XZ550 exhaust system for ideas.

Just reading some 'news' that Marc Marquez will ride Ducati next season, along with his younger brother.  His first testing so far shows he is rather fast compared to the other Ducati riders.  Honda kinda blew it by not keeping their bikes up to snuff, KTM and Apprillia are competitive, but Honda and Yamaha seem to have lagged behind in development.  Even Marc couldn't win on the Honda, so no reason to stay on un-comptetitive machinery.  So he left to ride Ducati along with his brother.  Hard to figure some corporate decisions, or maybe Honda was tired of winning. :o

Turn out the lights, the party's over. Unusual finish to the season. I won't spoil it yet. Have the Tuesday test to look to. Some different riders on different bikes and first looks at the 2024 bikes.

I guess I wasn't aware that there was no way to register, but you are correct. I see no place to do that. Faceplant is only good for the marketplace as far as I'm concerned. i may not know how to work it, but there is no way to find anything other than to scroll forever on any of the groups.

One of the great sorrows is that this site is closed to new registrations, thereby guaranteeing it will go tits up as us oldies start dropping dead or stop riding.
I know Facebook is fashionable, but it's nowhere near as good as this.

I offered to take over the site, but got no reply.

One weekend to go, 37 points and a 21 point lead for Bagnaia. Variables, tire quality, tire pressure and weather. The last can negate the first two.
