Title: #8 in the house!!!
Post by: Tiger on May 22, 2008, 06:01:50 PM
:) On Monday I took s3sriniv, from Waterloo, Ontario, up to Fiddlesticks in Orillia, Ontario, to pick up her Vision and deliver it to s3sriniv's place...That done, today, I delivered Robert's Vision (a.k.a. Vadasz1) ...Two more Vision's for the Fall Ride, eh!!

8) Today I picked up number eight   from a Yamaha dealer's . (It was the one s3sriniv was going to buy but he got buggered around and bought Fiddlesticks instead). It is another Black '82 in fairly decent condition. Front brake is seized  ::) and also needs a CDI unit, (which I have), so the fun, once again, begins, eh!!!

Cathy will kill me when she finds out...Ah well, better to beg forgiveness, than ask permission!!!

;) I've asked Night_Vision if he would be kind enough to post picture's that I've sent him... 8)

Why don't we get Yamaha to help in that vision of supplying every Canadian with a Vision.  It would be a hoot to see what they could dream up as a modern Vision.  Since our Visions were ahead of their time back then, imagine how far advanced the next version of Visions could be if YAMAHA had the balls to do it again......... ;D

Tiger , you seem to have very good luck in finding  Visions that are redemable. Of my 8.5  + an engine,  Only 2 were really  restorable . In the Pacific  Northwest , they all seem to have rusted bores on one cylinder .
I put togeather  my spare, by collecting all the best pieces and  and putting them on a frame,I had a title to.

:) Thanks for the positive comments guys 8)

I have only had to use three of the eight as "Donor" bike's...#2/3/4...3 & 4 where to far gone to even consider restoration. In hindsite, #2 was restorable, but at the time I needed part's for #1 = "The Mistress".  #5 went to Lil'Blaster, who now also has an '83!!, #6 being my '83 "The Canadian", #7 or "Lucky #7 is now with vadasz1 and now #8, "The Fat Lady"...

Wow Tiger, where do you find them? I am looking for a parts bike, but have had no luck yet. You should have gave me a call when you were in Orillia. You probably drove right past my road, could've had a refreshment and picked up the fairing.

I have advertised on KIJIJI around all of Ontario...(nearly all!!). Any part(s), donor or complete bike(s) that come up, I pass on to the members...That is how Lil'Blaster got his '83 that I found last year 8)

It really is worth advertising on the free website's... 8)

:) Curiosity got the better of me tonight and I changed the T.C.I./C.D.I. unit, hooked up a charged battery, put the petcock to prime for a minute, pulled on the "choke", give the "Go faster" a couple of twists and...WADAYUKNOW...SHE LIVES... ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D... 8)

:) Did a wee bit with her on Saturday...

Both rear lights were out, but not the brake lights  :-\ Replaced both bulbs with new 1157's... 8)

Headlight low beam was out, but not the high beam  :-\ Replaced with a new halogen bulb... 8)

Picked up new fuse holders on Saturday, in-line blade type with the fuse cover/cap on them. I'll be pulling the OEM fuse box and graft in the new ones to-day...

Checked the charging rate across the battery with a volt meter...."PING".... plus of sixteen volts!!! Guess I'll also be changing the R/R out to-day!!!

Princess Auto was having a sale on motorcycle cover's...black, 200 denier, water repellent nylon material...for only $15.55 for a large or $16.88 for an X-large!!! So I got one of each 8)

Looks like a beautifull riding day today...See you out there guy's... 8)

However, once we arrived back home, I removed the old OEM fuse box, which was in good condition!!! and grafted in the new in-line fuse holder's, including the one in the headlight ::)

That done, I fired up the B.B.Q, flipped on a couple of great "T" bone steaks while the old girl fried up some onions, mushrooms and peppers. That and a couple of pints of Guiness...Mmmmmmmmm 8) One happy Tiger  8)

Nice bike, eh? You can never have too many motorcycles. I probably couldn't let that one go myself. I was in Ontario once--got pulled over for going too slow (driving to cautiously as if I may have had a wee drop). I wasn't drinking, and I told the cop I didn't want to end up in a foreign jail.

 :) Up-date: To this point, I have...

* Installed a replacement T.C.I. unit as the original was blown... ::)

* Replaced the R/R, as the existing one was putting out plus of 16 volt's... :o
I have also cut out the two white multi-pin R/R connection and relocated the R/R to the outside for cooler running... :)

* Replaced the ball bearings with a taper head set... :)

* Replaced the front forks with an already rebuilt set as both the existing seals were leaking... :)
(I'll rebuild the original forks once every thing is completed and keep them for... ;)).

* Replaced the rear light and headlight bulb's as they where all blown... :o

* Replaced a handfull of OEM hardware with new product...and more to go!!! :)

We will be back in the Colonies in early June.

He's actually in Aurora.  I'm hopping over tomorrow around noon time to see it.  It's an 83 red & white with the fairing.  So if I do decide to get it then there will be 2 'Canadians' ready for the fall ride. ;D

Maybe they were twins seperated at birth........ ::)

I'll let you know tomorrow with a post as to what he wants for it.

Story is , he got the bike last year as a payment for work done for a friend of his.  He rebuilt the starter but forgot to ask him whether he did the bolt peening as well, will ask tomorrow.  He said he'll let me run it up and down the street and said that since I am a 'Collector' to offer him a price first.  I hate it when people sell things or want to sell things without even knowing what they're items are worth.  But if I can scoop it out from under him then I will somehow, even if I have to ask for a loan athe Tiger Bank of Erin? ;D

:) I removed, stripped down and rebuilt the front brake caliper today...Man did it take some work to get that piston out!!! 150 p.s.i. didn't budge it!!! I ended up alternating between soaking it in penetrating oil for 5 minutes and blowing in 150 p.s.i. It took several goes but finally "SHOT" out.

NOTE: If you haven't tried this procedure before, BEWARE...ALWAYS have the caliper on a solid surface, (I use the concrete floor of my garage), make sure the piston is facing downwards and keep your bloody fingers out of the way!!!

Once it was all stripped down, I cleaned off all the old, chipped paint from the main body and slider, washed everything in my parts washer, blow dried everything and repainted the main body/slider.

Once the paint was dry I rebuilt the caliper. Its now ready to go back on, as soon as I get the new steering head tapered bearings delivered & fitted... ;)

I also did the same thing on a pair of '83 calipers that I have...nearly have everything ready to install the '83 front end onto "The Mistress"...Just need to order up a set of Galfer S.S. Braided Brake Line's for her... 8)

Title: Re: #8 in the house!!!

Tiger I always stick a 9 inch Dowidat tyre iron in front of the piston ,against the two "horns" on the
caliper ( a large square shank screw driver will work also) so that when the piston fires out  :o :o :o,it stops right away, once it has moved , its an easy proposition to pull it out by hand.
Title: Re: #8 in the house!!!
Post by: Tiger on June 01, 2008, 06:46:25 AM
:) Rick, good point. I always use a piece of cotton towel, (between the piston & the concrete floor), folded over a couple of times...it cradles the piston enough to prevent the "horns" from getting damaged and catches any fluid spray.

I still think the best way to get the piston out is by using brake fluid and the master cylinder to pump it out. Just keep adding fluid and keep pumping....

of course if the fluid has turned to cheese.. then an alternate method needs to be employed
Title: Re: #8 in the house!!!
Post by: Rick G on June 02, 2008, 01:57:50 AM
NV , I guess I'm doing it the way I was taught. Most motorcycle shops wouldn't want the mess and cost of  the brake fluid method, air is cheaper and quicker, too.

They are the last piece of the "Jigsaw"...!! I have the '83 forks, rotor's, calipers, master cylinder, etc, that will now allow me to put an '83 front end onto "The Mistress"...my'82...and I'll flip "The Mistress" front end onto "The Fat Lady"...complete with a Galfer S.S. Braided Brake Line!!!

:) "The Fat Lady" is now back onto her own two feet....Ummmm, wheels I suppose :D :D :D :D... ;). I had originally put a set of tapered bearings in, (a new spare set)...but they had a couple of "notches" in them once tightened down, hmmmmmmm, not good!!! So I ordered up another set, from Pyramid. They where delivered on Thursday but today was the first chance to get back at her. I dropped the head out, removed the top bearing and laid them out on the work bench. I removed the bottom race...looked o.k...when I went to remove the top race, I noticed a wee crack!!! turns out the race had fractured in two places :o !!! and NO, I had not overtightened the head down...I removed the bottom bearing from the lower triple tree and installed the new set without any problems.

The rebuilt forks and brake caliper, fender, front wheel and speedo cable are all now reinstalled.

The front wheel bearings are good, so I greased them before installing the front wheel......(installed a new cotter pin and pinch bolt/washers & lock nut)...main axle castle nut torqued down to 80 foot pounds, (as specified).

I picked up a new battery for her at Walymart in Niagara Falls, New York yesterday...$29.99 (shelf price) and I also got $5.00 off for the old, shot battery at customer service!!! (Walmart in Canada are charging more than double their American counter parts for batteries and float chargers :o Bloody disgusting >:( ). That is now filled and on charge, using the new float charger that I also bought, (actually, I bought four of them ;)). The float charger will go to the new owner...whoever that may be 8)

8) Slowly but surely we are getting there :D :D :D :D :D... 8)

The tapered roller head bearings are tough and  not likely to be damaged by a little too much torque , anyway . I suspect yours were bad from the factory.

:) Well, I managed to get my fat a$$ into the garage today to do some work on "The Fat Lady"... :o ;)

I pulled the left side engine cover to get at and remove the flywheel...To do the starter clutch "fix" and tighten the 46mm shaft nut.

Two of the three soc' head cap screws, that hold in the starter clutch were very easy to remove. The third was tight.

The 46mm shaft nut was fractionally loose, like......screw off by hand, no wrench needed :o

Once everything was removed and striped down I threw it all into the parts washer for a good clean up. Once washed and dried, all the parts were inspected for ware/damage. Everything turned out good.

The bolts for the starter clutch were installed using red  thread locker and the thread ends peened in a triangle pettern. The 46mm nut was torqued down and the lock tabs bent over.

All went back together quite smoothly. I made a new side cover gasket using an OEM one as a template. Gearshift lever, footpeg and side stand were all washed off and reinstalled. New oil filter installed and fresh oil put in. (The oil that I dropped out of her was like water and the filter was shot).

Ignition on, choke on, a couple of twists of the "go faster" mechanism, hit the starter and up she fired...and no noisy ringydingy!!! ::) ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Another job off of the "To Do" list... 8)

What be this triangle pattern you mention?  I haven't read this part before I don't believe.  Do you peen each one on a different outside, erm, side so all three points would form a triangle, or three points on each bolt?  I'll hopefully have my starter rebuild kit next week then I'll be able to jump into this. :) I was going to this week, then I remembered that having more than one thing in pieces at a time is bad mojo for me. :(

:) Were the threaded end of the bolt peeks through, I peen it with a punch three times on each one...in a triangular pattern  .   .

:) Well, as of three o'clock ('ish) today, Wolf and his "Flyin' Banana" have a new riding partnership... 8)  Gord, (a.k.a. xswheels) from Sarnia made the three hour journey with his buddy Steve to check out and purchase #8 "The Fat Lady". This is Gords first Vision...but not his first bike. He certainly knows his way around motorcycles.

"The Mistress" now has, for the first time in a long time, the garage all to herself!!! Kinda weird though... ;)

So, welcome to the OnROV family Gord. We look forward to having you join us for the 2009 spring ride... 8)

Now where oh where is #9... :o  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)
