Title: YelowJacket! is a Custom Bagger Now. Upgrade COMPLETED! New Pics
Post by: YellowJacket! on November 07, 2008, 08:14:28 PM
OMG!  I am absolutely beside myself.  My XV750 Saddle bags arrived today.  Not only are they NEW but they are still sealed in the original Yamaha packaging!!  They are freakin gorgeous! The even better part is that they are BLACK  not silver.  I opened one of them up and it is simply amazing.  Brand New fresh new motorcycle smell too.

I already have the mounting brackets which will have to be slightly modified (probably a slight bend or two only) but the bags came with all the keyed locking tabs and the keys for the bags as well.

I have an exam to take tonight so I don't have time to take some pics but I will tomorrow and post them.  This was probably the best deal I got for YJ yet!  ;D   ;D   ;D   ;D

Oh and BTW,  My Nelson Riggs bags are going up for the first decent offer.  I'll post some pics and specs on them too.

OK, finished my exam.  Although I'm somewhat braindead after a long day at work followed by a particularly difficult exam on the nervous system, I decided to take and post some pics.  I wont have any days off till later in the week so I wont be able to mount them until probably next weekend.
The pictures really don't do them any justice.

David, How do I get me a set of those?

Ive had a search going on ebay for about a year for "Yamaha Saddle Bags", Virago Saddle Bgags and "Virago Hard Bags" and finallly got a hit about 2 weeks ago when a seller listed two NOS sets for 100.00.  Both sets were listed at the same tome and I had bid on only one set and lost by 1.00 (selling price was 121.00.  I contacted the seller since the other set didn't sell and he let me do a buy it now for the bags.
They arrived yesterday in the original Yamaha shippping packaging with the parts sticker and everything.

If you are looking for a set of hard bags, I have some that are similar that kiawrench gave me but I don't have any mounting brackets for them.  They will also need to be stripped and painted but are otherwise in pretty good condition,  You'll just have to fabricate some brackets.  I can post some pics if you are interested.

Lucky you, damn, first time I have been jealous of anyone in years.... :'(  What are their measurements?Reason I ask...I see old removable Venture bags similar to those. But the Ventures are too big(tall).  I have seen those many times on Viragos. Did those come with any mounts? If not...I recommend you do NOT modify the brackets on the bags. Make your mounts to fit the factory brackets. If you look enough, you could find original bags mounts for a virago and modify them.

I got a set of mounts and a single bag that was a little worn.  The mounts were in great shape and just needed a little sanding and paint.
I have the other Virago bag that came with hte mounts as well as the locks and spring loaded locking pins but no keys.

If you are inteerested in the single bag and want to take a chance that you may find a matching one, PM me an offer.  Right now its just taking up space in my barn.  I can send you some pics of it too if you want.  Can't get inside it though since I don't have the keys.

As far as mods to the brackets, I'm gonna have to think it over.  They are *close* to the mounting points on the Vision.  One fo the tabs sits about 2" behind the grab handle on the tail light assy.  I'm not sure if I want to cut it off and have it moved and re welded or just remove it and fabricate a strap and bolt it to the grab handle.  The grab handles will also have to go as they stick out too far.  I think the brackets can also be bent slightly to fit the Vision but I don't want to mess with anything until I am sure I won't ruin anything.

I'll probably be posting some more pics tomorrow.

Finally had a day off and no schoolwork ao I was able to work on my new bagger project today.

The mounting brackets are almost a perfect fit and the bags fit snugly to the bike.  I'm gonna have to make only two slight modifications to the brackets and my MAC Mounts to get it all perfect.  I'll have to cut off themounting tab on the rear of the brackets and have it welded about 2" forward of its present location.  Right now it sticks uneder the tail light cone.  I want to move it forward so I can connect it where the passenger grab handles go.  The forward tab on the left side will have to be bent inward about an inch.  The right side mount also rubs the swingarm due to the Mac bracket but I can fix that.

The OEM signals fit almost perfectly using Kevins "Shorty Stalks" but I'm toying with the idea of going with a signal/parking light/brake light setup.

Heres lots of pics of the project:

I think the black really goes well with the bikes current color scheme and they are just too nice to strip and paint so I'm gonna keep them the way they are.  Besides painting them yellow would just make them look like pollen bags.

Last up is to modify the under seat plastic rails to get them to fit over the brackets.  Shoulda kept the spares I gave away.

More pics coming soon.

I did discover one interesting thing about them.  I WILL have to do the 83 shock upgrade.  I'm off work 3 days next week, so I'll probably start that next.

I'm guessing a large proportion of owners would be lining up at the dealer if they were to re-release.  They would probably sell more now than back in the 80's.

I used Kevins shorty stalks with 1/2" spacers.  I'll post a closeup pic of them.

Its amazing.  These bags look like they were made for the Vision, especially with the trunk and full fairing.
I saw the other trunk listed on ebay but I'm tapped as far as cash goes.

Your bike looks really good.

I think they kinda were made for the vision as far as styling goes. The virago looks alot like a vision as far as angles go so its no surprise the bags that match those angles matches the vision too :)
I can't imagine not having the storage space on longer day trips, the room for extra gear, snacks, and water is quite valuable.

For longer day trips, I find my tank bag works great.  I even have a hard time filling it! If I have my video system with me, I often have to put an extra fleece vest in just to take up space.  If I need snacks, I buy them along the way and I have a 100 oz. Camelback bladder for water that fits in the tank bag.  I can get a drink even while moving.   ;D

I generally use my saddle bags for times I need to haul lots of stuff.  I can get enough in them for a long weekend.  When I add the tail bag, I could go for a long time - indefinite if I can find a place to do a small load of laundry every few days.  That is if my stator would allow me to get more than a couple hundred miles from home.   ::)

My plans are that if I get into UAB or MUSC, YJ will be my primary mode of transportation.  I was thinking down the lines that the hard bags would give me a bit more utility and the fact that they are removable and lockable really helps too.

David

ps. plus, they look really good too.

Yeah, I've been pondering hard bags.  It would be nice to be able to lock up stuff on the bike after my commute rather than the back pack.

For commuting, hard bags would be great.  For general light touring and running around eown on errands, I generally prefer the soft bags as they are easily removable & don't leave the brackets behind.

UGH!  Got  a call from a Yamaha dealer in Ohio today - the one that listed the bags on ebay.  I had bid on the black bags and lost and talked to him and ended up making a deal on the silver bags and getting them.  Well, when the bags arrived, they were the black ones so I just thought he had another set of black ones and sent them - since I had told him I really had wanted the black ones.
Well, he had mistakenly sent the silver ones to the other guy and the black ones to me and the other guy is apparently pissed - moreso than me.  I told him that YJ was happily tucked in for winter storage along with his nice new bags but he really wanted them back.
Since I don't have the box anymore, I told him to send me the silver ones along with a return label and I would regretfully ship the black ones back - I guess it is the right thing to do.  Now I just have to save up to paint them black.

It was nice while it lasted.

nope, I got the brackets seperately.  Only had to do slight mods to the brackets.  I'm lucky that I didn't modify the bags...yet.  I was gonna drill just below the indentations for the signals and add some illuminated marker/brake lights but didn't have the time to yet due to final exams coming up.  I almost told him that I did, but alas, that would probably have awoken the grandady of all MC gremlins and come back to haunt me.

I'll probably ride with them silver for a while and then just paint them.  May trade my neighbor a decent computer for another Class A paint job.

Now, the choice comes up...yellow (pollen bags) or black (cool)??

hmmm.  may have to try photoshop on that and see how it looks.  too bad I just couldn't photoshop the bags and that would be it....

If the silver ones aren't as perfect as the black ones...and they are supposed to be...I'm keeping the black ones.  Darn, I should have gone and mounted the lights, then I would have had drilled the holes in them.

Well the silver bags arrived today along with a return shipping label to send them back to the seller so he can forward them to the rightful owner.  I must say though that although they are not black, the silver looks really nice!  I'm sorry H2O, but they would really really look good on your bike.  ;)  They are just too nice to paint....yet, at least.  They arrived once again in the original OEM plastic bag and wrap with the labels on them so they too are "new".

As soon as I get done with exams and writing my final paper, I'll take some more pics and post them.

Its gonna hurt a little to box up the black ones and send them back...maybe I can "accidentally" send back the silver ones.   ::)   :o

Anyway...more to come after exams are done...

I was just looking at the pictures you posted with the black bags. I think silver might not look too bad, it ties in with the silver
swing arm and engine. Do they have any pin striping on them like the black ones did? Not to be too picky but the orange pin
striping did not really look right on them(did not tie into anything else on the bike)

If I was doing any long distance touring or commuting with mine, I'd probably want some hard bags.  They are quite handy for some things.  However, for my weekend getaways and pleasure riding, I'll stick with the soft luggage.  I bought the set I have within a week of when I bought the V back in 84.  Had to ride from Steamboat to the Yamaha dealer in Breckenridge to get them.  The owner of that dealership had them on his Turbo Seca.  He offered to sell the bike to me as well.  Wish I'd had the $$ then, but I'd just gone into debt to buy the V.   :'(

The silver bags would look good on your bike too, Davis but they will look better black.

Definitely the best looking bags I have seen for a Vision ;).  Good hunting and awesome integrity ;)! First time I have seen your bike (don't get out much) and had to say I love the look.  I vote black...black...black..., but then I'm very biased.  They are so worth a nice arcylic black paint job.

I was actually out in the garage looking at them today thinking about the black.  They look too good to paint.  They will also require quite a bit of prep to get a good - or equally as good black paint jobh on them.  The pinstripe and yamaha embelm (sticker) are clearcoated over so they will have to be sanded off.  The trim is very difficult to remove.  But, where there is a will, there is a way.  I have plenty of will, just none of the way ($$$).  :-o
Over the next couple weeks, I hope to finish modding the brackets to make them more permanent.  Not a big job but one that I have to be careful not to mess up.  Will also have to cut and mod the under seat plastic that NightVision sent me.  Its supposed to be mild and overcast tomorrow so I might roll it out of the garage and take a few updated pictures of it.

You know the silver will look pretty nice too  ;), definitely not worth worrying about until you have nothing left to do, lots of money hanging out of your pockets, and you really want an update.

Enjoy your new bags, they are a true find!

YOU WANT BLACK...?  DuPont #99 pitch black...it's a gloss black enamel that all paint shops know. I painted my whole '82 and parts of my '83 with it. No clear needed.  It's a deep black that makes others look grey.

Spent a little time in the garage today waiting for the new battery to charge and I rolled YJ out to take a few pics of the silver bags.

One of the slight modifications that I'm going to have to do:

A little TOO close for comfort.  I need to add some spacers to the Peg bracket to offset it a little:

A little bend or a spacer should fix this one:

Back to the OEM turn signal stalks.  The shorty's were too short and got in the way of the release spring:

David, let me know if you want/need pictures of how i mounted mine. I had to make some brackets and spacers but i've mounted the bags in all the areas you haven't yet.

I dont have any pictures of exactly where and how the bags are mounted, but i have a camera and i just wrenched blackula from the wintry grasp of the glacier that is the north facing wall of our house.

You can either PM me the pics or post them here for prosperity.  Either will work.

Thanks,

Been wrestling with the brackets a bit.  They are almost a perfect fit....almost.  So today I stopped by my local custom bike shop (Makes OCC look like amatures).  I've known the guy for about 20 years and he is the one that did the work on my first tank.

Anyway, I stopped by with the brackets today and he asked me to bring the bike next week.  He is going to move the tab towards the rear about 2 inches forward so it lines up with either the grab handle or the mounting hole just forward of it, bend the forward tab back a bit and add a bend to the lower bar so it doesn't hit the swingarm.
All cutting, welding, finishing, priming and painting...and a 10 year guarantee (seriously) - $25.00 each.  Not bad since he guarantees that it will fit perfectly and will make any necessary adjustments if needed.

He said I'd have to leave the bike for a few days but he would make sure it was perfect.  I'll have to post some pics when I get it back.

All I can think of saying is......WOW!  I got YJ back from Schraders Custom Cycles (the ONLY work that I did not do on YJ) where Mark Schrader custom modified the saddle bag brackets to Fit YJ. Theres some good news and some bad.

First, the good.
The job is done.  He did a fantastic job and it looks better than factory.  The way he worked the brackets to fit the bike makes them look like they were made for it.  It ended up being a much bigger job than anticipated and it may be a while before  I can afford a new back tire...or anything else, but I think it was worth it.  If I had anyone else do the job, I would have probably died on YJ because of something I did not know about.  My frame was cracked.  Yup, right under the seat covered up by the rubber bumper for the tank.  I knew YJ had been a little loose and thought it was due to a swingarm bearing which I planned to do when I replaced my shock.
He ended up bracing and welding the frame and you pretty much can't tell.  He primed and painted it too.
As for the brackets, he did an interesting thing.  He took the forward mounting pieces off each bracked and swapped them to the opposite side.  That gave each bracket about another 2" of clearence from the frame adn allowed him to mount them without having to cut my plastic rail covers under my seat.  Everythign including the wiring is done so I can remove the brackets if  ever need to.  I can still ride without the bags though if I need to as well.  He also cut the rear tabs off and moved them forward about 4", rotated tehm 45 degrees and put a 90 degree tab in them (I think I got the math right) so the mount directly to the grab rail mounting holes under the seat.  Again, it looks perfectly stock.

The bad news is that it cost almost 3 times my original estimate of 100 to 120.00!!  Most of the cost was due to the crack in the frame becasue he has to strip off most of the seat, tank, fender, battery and everything else.  He's one of the only local shops that insurance companies will let do frame repair and I have a lifetime (not sure if its mine or the bikes) warranty.  YJ is in it with me for the long haul.

Oh... forgot to mention.  While I was at the shop, one fo the guys that was interested in YJ came in.  He collects bikes and has quite a few Ymahas.  He was really impressed with YJ and wanted to know if I would sell her.  I went ahead and said $5000.00 and he countered with $4000.00!  No deal.  I'm tellin y'all....these bikes are worth way more than we think!  I've got his number in case I change my mind, come to my senses, or my wife kicks the crap out of me.

Looks great, David!  Glad he caught the cracked frame.  At least now, the only cracked part of your bike is the rider!  (cheesy)

Even at the final price, it is reasonable for the amount of work he did.

I agree that these bikes are becoming more valuable all the time.  The ROV has gone a long ways in overcoming the stigma the Vision got from the early 80s motorcycle press.

I just took a big hammer and clearance'd those brackets that go to the passenger pegs, put in a longer bolt, and a nut. Did he move the bags back or out at all? Looks like theres alot of gap there now.
Title: Re: YelowJacket! is a Custom Bagger Now. Upgrade COMPLETED! New Pics
Post by: YellowJacket! on July 31, 2009, 04:11:18 PM
He bent the lower brackets out a bit so they fit between the peg and the peg mount rather than the peg mount and the nut.  They were rubbing on the swingarm on one side when mounted on the inside.  He also cut the front mounts off and flipped them from side to side. left is now right and right is left whic gives them the clearnence.  From a clearnece standpoint they fit perfectly with the standard turn signal mounts. Kenny's um, I mean KEVIN's shorties were actually too short and hit the spring loaded lock.  Finally, he moved the rear mounting tab forward about 3" and turned it sideways and put a 90 degree bend in it to give the rear part clearnece.  It matched up perfectly with the lift handle mounting hole on each side.  He got everything to fit so good that there was only about an 8th of an inch that he had to scrape off the side plastic to get it to line up perfect.
I think I have more pics I can post that tell a better story.

The gap between the bag and the plastic rail is 1.75".  Looks like a lot but its really not and gives me room to open the seat if I have to.
