Title: The BluV will be Save!
Post by: akvision on October 21, 2009, 07:15:48 PM
Here we go... the start of another Adventure.... "Save the BluV".

Some back round.. We are talking about a 82 Hybrid Blue Vision in Southern California.   I came upon the dead bike on this site as one for sale in San Jose.  "Coil" had expressed interest in it and when the deal did not go...it was suddenly mine..my nephew lives over the hill in Santa Cruz, made the deal for me, picked it up.  It is non running, the cosmetics, paint are good to fair the frame good to some rust, the alum is crusty.. it looks like it was subject to weather and has non functional breaks, dead starter, and rotates but does not fire.  The unit has +38K miles.  Needs help and tires.  I have a functional starter (AKVISION spare), rebuilt carb set.

So, this weekend I take off for Southern California and Pharumph NV, (with a buddy, Mike) picking up a Chev C30 Cube van and bringing it north.  We will go to Santa Cruz and pick up the "BluV" bring it back to Alaska.  We are loading up with a bunch of other freight too.
Will be loaded by the time we head for Canada via 97 and 17 YellowKnife Highway to Prince George and Prince Rupert then by Alaska State Ferry 'Taku' to Ketchikan.

We will unload it and put it in my shop and I will bring this Blu-baby back to life.  Mike is interested in it, so.. we are going to make it happen and get a new visionary too.   We are going to work on the project together.

We will post pictures and keep updated on this thread.  AKvision.

What makes you call it a hybrid?  Sounds like a good winter project.  BDC

Well, BDC... it has an 83 fairing and oil filler... and may other upgrades...  maybe it's a stretch..I will call it an 82 upgrade. ::)

Here is the original post on how I came to own it.

Yeah, I haven't been out to the garage for a few weeks.. I guess I should get my butt in gear and do some much needed cleanup.

I've just been TOO SAD regarding the Buell news.. all I do is sit in my basement and cry.

We got it!
It's in the van and now in Puyallup, WA.
On Wednesday we head for Canada on Highway 97 then on to Prince Rupert and Ketchikan.

This bike is a definite save..  its a bit crusty, but all there and a little cleaning, tuning, carb work will get a bark and see where we go from there...  I will highgrade the Blu parts and swap out with AKV and make my Denver unit into the "Blu AKv.  The  blue paint is superior and the tank is like new.  But we will save it and transform from Blu to Black.

Will keep you posted when we get to Alaska.

We have arrived!! :)

The BluV is in Alaska.  Now the real work begins.
We got here through a storm with 36' (yes, thirty six foot seas, and there needs to be a puke happy face) a little shook up but in one piece.  Out first winter gale.  No more dry weather for the V for now.  Will move to the shop and make space next to the Beemer and start to see what needs to be done.

The bike already looks like it has has some upgrades... fork brace, steel brake line on the first look.
Nothing looks like it has been badly wrenched... no obvious issues with leaks, coolant or oil.  Just observed issues of surface rust, and corrosion on the alum parts.  Front brakes are none functional like pumping air, no visible leaks on the fluid, clutch is very stiff, as well throttle is stuck open.  Thumb screw is rusted stuck and boots badly cracked.
Grips are none stock.  The paint is just about perfect.  Tank looks new.  Looks like someone started and gave up.  There is compression, but amounts are unknown????
Will move to garage is a couple of days, will keep posted

\The adventure continues.

AK,  Tom does do bikes , he has a 250 Honda in Ketchikan and on the back of his bus, here in AZ.
I'm a former small boat sailor, I love rough weather , at least as far as not going green.

It is in the shop. Tank, seat, air cleaner is off.  Butterflys are stuck open.  Carbs look good from the top, but don't they all.
It has the new vacuum connection on the airbox and all looks clean there. Fuse box is toast and replaced with quick clips and fuses.
Alum is really crappy and corroded. Rare swing arm is rusty as well the shock looks like ick.  I have a great spare even if it is a pogo stick.  It is nearly new with 5200miles on it.  Oh,, the tranny is a little stiff.  All the control cables are stuck and none operable.  The rest of it does not look badly molested.  Carb screws are straight and idle and mixture jets look intact.  Will just spray it down and let it sit for a while, thawing out...the plates say expire in 2003!  I guess I will spray some stuff in the cyl to keep loose.
My buddy Mike will be working on it with me.   It may stay Blu.

Here are some photos of the start of disassembly.
The BluV is pretty crusty, rusty, and corroded.  Bike is originally from Berkeley, CA.
Front forks are leaking.  This is a later model 82 that has been upgraded to a full fairing, oil filler and all.

Unit#11H-011333.

We have discovered the engine is stuck.  stuck. stuck.

I put it in low gear and grunted no movement.... I put it in high gear and grunted. Still no movement.  I have the plugs out and have sprayed croil oil in the holes.  I think next is MMO.  And I need a bigger grunt than me.

More to follow.

pull the left plate off so you can get to the large nut, that is the one that you use to turn so you can check valve clearances.  Pull eth spark plugs, and then use a large 6 point socket on that nut.  That will be a whole lot easier than trying to get through a lot of gearing to turn the engine over.

Brian (typing this from memory, so please check the manual.)

Thanks B!  I will try it.

Well, I took off the little side cover on the left and turned the 14mm bolt clockwise.  I set the torque wrench to 80# and the pistons did not move.  I don't think the bolt will handle much more.  I have the plugs out and have sprayed light penetrating oil...

More I guess and hope that after turkey day.. it will loosen up.

It will soak and I will try Dec 3.

more to follow. :-\

:) It won't my friend.

I would suggest that you drop the oil...(see what may be lurking in it :o)...and remove the left side cover completely. That way you have a better view of anything that may be out of wack/jammed, etc on that side of the motor...best of luck.

Try rocking the bike fore & aft.  it's not at all unusual for the tranny & clutch plates to freeze up. Both my bikes were this way when i got them, Cafe took 40 min of VIOLENT rocking to free up, & now she's the fastest Vision out there!  ;) ;) ;)

Lucky, the problem is that apparently akvision can't rotate the crankshaft even when appling force directly to its' end.  That's not good.  A glued up clutch would not stop crankshaft rotation, with the bike in gear on center stand.

yeah, but i'm thinking he may be able to rock the cylinders loose by having the clutch out & using the transmisition, drive train.  i do the same thing but on a smaller scale with seized up 2 strokes...

spray liberal amounts of starting fluid into plug holes..... wait... ok, now some more..... quick!! plugs back in, caps back on.., turn your back... hit the key....

and wait two seconds.... maybe you'll wake her up   :o

I've got more suggestions if that doesn't work   ;)

Thanks for the comments guys.  I will try the rocking thing and may be if it soaks for a while it will break loose.
(I have internet at the snowy cabin in Canada... thank God for G3 technology.)    Now I can move to Canada in the winter an work from there.
I will have to wait till I get back to Ketchikan.

You're going to have to rock the SHIT out of it if its anything like my first vision. From 10mph in fifth gear it would lock up the rear tire. It took a couple tries (and alot of calories pushing it back up the driveway) and jumping all my weight on the seat to get it to break free. When it did it was with an audible snap. The clutch was fine, it worked how it should, pull it in it releases let it go it grabs, it was something inside the motor that was actually locked up.

You have to think theres alot of stuff with very close tolerances inside the case, there could be any number of things that arent permanently damaged, but still stuck together. A torque wrench on the end of the crank might not turn, but think if theres something in there that has a mechanical advantage over the crank, it doesnt have to be very 'sticky' for the crank to not want to turn at all. Kinda like trying to turn the rear wheel of a bike with a wrench on the pedals if you're in high gear.

You can drop the oil (and should/will have to anyway) but a good indicator of whats going on is also the oil filter. I've seen an oil filter that had injested some kind of cleaner or water that turned the filter opaque to oil and crushed it like a pop can (and seized the engine in the process).

BTW akvision, when are you coming down for a ride this spring, eh?

Yeah, in May.

Rhpaw and I are headed to MO, then LA, AL, FL then back to TX and home to CO.

The engine was turning with the starter in the summer, my nephew dumped a bunch of gas in the cyl and tried to get it to bark.  He said it had compression... then he just left it alone... now stuck I think the rings siezed with no lub and just gas in a high humidity climate.

The perfect recipe when you think about it...
We all just did not think about it.   So, we got what we got.

Oh well, if it is beyond it's self.  I will end up with lots of good parts, great fairing and a new tank, both with great paint.  AKVision will turn Blu. 8)

Have you determined if your engine is worth repairing yet?  Reason I ask is that I have several that you might be interested in when you come through Texas.  BDC

Still stuck, and the clutch is stuck too.
We will work on it tonight and maybe a final decision will be announced.  Clock says 38K miles and pretty mungy.  I don't have much in it.
The transport cost was added to a trip already planned.  So getting it here it Alaska was a freebe.   It could be the parts are more than the sum to AKVISION.
Like the nearly new Blue tank and Fairing and trim.   If it looks like a looser, the AKVISION will get a new cloak.  And a new name.
"BluAkV"

I AM SORRY TO REPORT:   I have come to the conclusion that the BluV is best off as a parts bike.

The Bad
1. bad corrosion everywhere, and I mean only the plastic is not corroded.  The elements have taken a toll.
2. seized engine, disk brakes non functional, stuck, carbs stuck & corroded, control cables stuck, wiring frayed
3. high miles, cracked tires, rear brakes worn out, seat ripped, forks leaking, fork sliders rusted
4. economics are not reasonable.  ( I would save it, if it was worth it, but based on typical market value, the amounts required to make this machine roadable is just not good economics)

The Good, "It's a Vision."

http://picasaweb.google.com/usa584/BluVInKetchikan?authkey=Gv1sRgCJKq8PyAuc_gvAE#5412591350264971090

1. good tank and fairing system
2. fair exhaust system
3 maybe some good parts
4 The "Kid Jedi" wants the engine.

It is salvage time.   AKVision will be Blu :-\
So, the thread is ended.  Thanks for your interest.

BDC,
The fork brace is going on the Beemer.  The blue Tank is going to Denver and the spare tank will be available, but most likely not till spring.  The fairing and lowers will also go to Denver... there will be spare plastics available, again in the spring.  I will let you know when they are available.

Maybe on the mirrors.  I have a set that  were removed... they were a bit rough.   The rubber was bum but still in place.  I was going to put them on the AKVISION  but we left before I had a real chance to evaluate....... will let you know.

What color and condition is the spare tank? I have plenty of plastics and four dented tanks.  BDC
Title: Re: The BluV will be Save!
Post by: akvision on December 08, 2009, 09:12:25 PM
BDC,
The tank is Black and has been POR-15.  It does not leak and is in good to excellent condition. No dents, just sun worn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWVMJzmJXLs

Watch this video and you will see the tank.  It is in need of a paint job, otherwise very good.  I got a Blu one that, needs POR-15, but does not need paint... anyway I think and Alaska Vision should be "Ice Blu"

I am in Alaska and the bike is in Denver, Christmas is coming and so not much is going to happen till after Feb 2010.
