Title: What should the fuel spray look like out of the accellerator nozzles in the carb
Post by: Protonus on April 13, 2012, 07:18:43 PM
 ???
I apologize, I am "familiar" with carbs, but not knowledgeable, I am quite well versed in fuel injection, and mechanical knowledge etc.  This might be a dumb question as such.
I have an '82, late model, has the airbox mod etc.  AFAIK the carb's are original.

Inside of the carbs, is a spray nozzle that engages when you twist the throttle off a simple mechanical pump, each nozzle sprays at the same time with even the slightest twist of the throttle, the harder you twist or the further, the more it sprays.  They spray down past the throttle plate into the intake, nice straight shot.

My question is, what should this spray pattern look like?  Because, I am expecting a spray, but that is not what my bike does.  It fires a stream.  Like a super soaker.  Or a spray bottle when you have it turned to stream. I wouldn't actually call it a spray at all.   It's aimed nicely, parallel to the wall of the carb, and shoots past the throttle plate nice.  But I've never seen a "stream" of fuel desired.  Usually you want fuel to be atomized and sprayed.

Now I only ask this because of the aforementioned statement, and the fact that I've seen mention of a spray cone on here before, I definitely don't have a cone. That said, my bike runs great.  I'd say almost no driveability issues at all.  Starts and runs and accellerates great! Hardly any bog or lag ever, when it does, it seems to be temp dependent and intermittent and from what I see on here, that's not uncommon even brand new.  I am currently running without YICS and when I had it, I had a little more power and a little less stumble, cept I had all the other problems from a leaking YICS lol... I plan to replace it with a new metal one this year (details on that when i've made some prototypes).  Anyways, I don't have any reason to think that these nozzles are causing me an issue, other than my understanding of fuel atomization and comments I'v seen on here.  However, if they're wrong or robbing me of power or throttle response I'd like to fix it.

So what should they look like and how would I fix it if they're wrong?

My carbs were rebuilt and thoroughly cleaned, all jets/passages, by the PO I bought he bike from.  he is an old Polish Carb Mechanic who definitely knew his trade and knew carbs a lot better than me. However, he also took some shortcuts or guessed. I found many vacuum lines going to the wrong ports etc (can't fault him for that, the only way I knew they were wrong is comparing them to my spare parts bike).  Fixing crossed vac lines etc, really improved my bike's driveability and got rid of all stumbles etc I had, after also fixing the leaky YICS and Petcock...

What you describe is nominal.  Mess with nothing.   Ride.  Ride.  Ride.

I'm guessing what you describe as a stream is with the engine off. When it's running with air moving through the carb throat, the stream will resemble more of an atomized cloud.

Yes engine off. Makes more sense. QBS your reply was great lol! Thanks guys. Putting the bike together now

:) Cock your leg over the Vision and go ride her hard. Believe me, you will both really enjoy the experience ...  8)

Sure of it? My nozzles stream a solid line, so I'm thinking that when my ride stumbles on acceleration it's due to this poor atomization...

agreed, engine vacuume alone will not do it.  my trick for cleaning out the delicate nozzles:
