What have you changed recently on your home computer? If it worked previously but not now, something has changed.

I turned the firewall off, no change.
I turned off antivir, and was able to set all messages as read.
This antivirus program claims to be only checking viruses, not internet activity. It's not very configurable.
Don't know enough about the check on your end to go further.

Aha, the solution is at hand.
There is a way in the antivir configuration to specify processes which the real time virus checking ignores. Once I put firefox on the list, setting "all messages read" proceeds without a hitch.
