Title: short vin number
Post by: ArrrGeee on August 08, 2012, 01:58:56 PM

anyone run into this ?
there is not enough numbers stamped on the frame / engine / white tag
to get it registered ?
according to the woman at my local DMV, it is a model year 1980  or older...
have to contact the police next.
arg Yamaha....

how did you deal with it ?

Hmmm...   I suspect most of you have a 9 digit vin,

I just got off the phone with Yamaha at this number: 1-800-962-7926
they verified the serial and will be sending an official letter stating that the vin is correct.

Hopefully none of you get stuck dealing with monkees like the one's I seem to have to deal with...

according to the gentleman I spoke with, he indicated that Yamaha didn't
actually switch to the 17 digit vin number until somewhere in 1983.

anybody ?

Have seven 82's and three 83 frames and all have eight digits followed with a space and then a single number or letter with another space and then eight more digits. At least one of them was built in 81.   BDC

Where on the right coast are you? My '82 Kawi has 17 digits but NJ DMV has never had an issue with the shorter Yamaha number on my Vision.

geez Bobby, maybe I should buy a frame from you, it'd probably be less hassle than
the fools I've been dealing with.

Maybe they were made at different factories ?
I've had other Yamaha's that had the short Vin and remember some flap about it
but perhaps because the standard had just changed back then.
we're talking 30 years now, and most people cant remember what they
had for dinner last week... ;-)

I'd ride it like I stole it, if I can prove that I didn't. how's that for Irony.

Found a title for one 82 frame though I believe all would be registrable.      BDC

while I'd rather not do a frame swap if Yamaha is helping out on this one,
does that mean you are offering to sell it ?
pm me with a a quote and shipping if you are.

here is more information on Yamaha VIN numbers than anyone would care to know...
nice posting.

Rick I only had minor issue with the VIN being too short for them. Its the emissions place that always is like WTF.
