Title: The Vandal resurrects his Vision
Post by: Vandal171 on January 06, 2013, 04:55:07 PM
So as some of you know I picked up a 1982 Vision a week ago for the grand sum of $152.50! Well I just finished tearing it down and making a thorough evaluation of the condition of the bike. The good news is it will live to see the road again, I'm going to bring it back from the dead.  ;D

Now for the bad news, this is not going to be an easy restoration. To the positive, I gave it a snort of starting fluid and she roared right to life so I know it runs. The throttle cable is broken at the moment so I didn't put fuel to it. The fuel tank has been sealed by a PO and is in decent shape. I pulled the carbs and opened them up. They are pretty good just going to need a good cleaning and some new gaskets. Someone tried to pry open the YICS for some reason and it is fubared. The stator is also bad on it, melted plug and continuity across two terminals.  :(  However, someone has previously repaired the starter clutch bolts, they are peened over, so that is one thing I don't have to worry about. The starter has just a slight residue of oil in it, it still spins the motor over good. I'm going to replace the seal anyway. The shift shaft is dry as a bone so I really don't think I'm going to worry about that seal. All the hoses are stiff as hell so it will get new ones. It is missing a few small items, one tank mount rubber is gone, the seat hinges, the cap is missing for the coolant catch can, and some hardware is missing. I am beginning to believe this bike was was torn down and repainted recently. The paint on the frame is perfect, not one rust spot anywhere. The paint job on the tank and fenders is recent but was not a quality job. It has a bit of rash on the right engine cover and the forks don't seem to match the rest of the bike, like they were replaced. They are the correct forks for the bike. The pinch bolts for the handlebars are missing, someone had a Harley clutch cable cobbed on it, the clutch handle is the wrong one, and it has a brand new speedo cable. The more I think about it, I bet it was wrecked and rebuilt. Anyway, I have a parts list I need to fill so if anybody has some of this stuff and wants to sell it hit me up.

Throttle cable
Clutch cable
Stator
Fuel tank rubber mounts
Cap for the overflow tank
Seat hinges
Rear Brake pedal
Front foot pegs
YICS
starter seal
Left side engine cover gasket
Carb gaskets
Air filter
Possibly a headlight I have to take it apart yet it looks messed up
Headlight mount, mines bent

I think that about covers it. Have faith my bretheren, I have the technology, I can rebuild it!

I Can  come up with  the brake pedal and  the front foot peg assemblies. I probably have the  head light bucket  and mount ,  Might have a head light lens /reflector assy . I'd have to check in the shed.  I'll pm you my cell # so we can talk.

There is a Tim Parrot stator on Ebay right now for $80.00. http://www.ebay.com/itm/180882535014?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619

I have heard good things about his stuff but have never used anything of his. Does anybody have experience with his parts and is this a good deal? Thanks

My brother has a Tim Parrot stator and it's performing as expected... $80 is a good deal, just be aware that the core swap has to be OEM with all the grommets. If its not OEM, you'll have some grief DAMHIK.

PM'd you on your parts request.

I agree, sounds like a good deal. Actually, IMHO any brand that is new is much better than a used Vision stator.

Regarding the starter seal, Jimustanguitar was nice enough to buy up a bunch and had a few left as of October '12. http://ridersofvision.net/rovforum/index.php?topic=14342.msg130343#msg130343 (http://ridersofvision.net/rovforum/index.php?topic=14342.msg130343#msg130343)

I put a used XZ stator in my  VX a 2 years ago ! So far so good!  But then thats what the fellow said who  fell off of the Empire state building, as he passed each floor on the way down.

I installed my Tim Parrot stator last year.  Too early to tell, I probably have less than a 1000 miles on it.  But it was very nicely done.

I'm talking about putting a used Vision stator in another Vision.  :P But knowing your luck Rick you'd probably get away with it!  ;D

Rik, Vx's are much easier on stators than XZ's  and the stator was honey coloured not black , so I figured  it was worth the effort .Changing a VX stator is a bit easier too.

I figured as much from your comment.  :D  It would be unusual for a used Vision stator to go 2 years in another Vision - assuming normal mileage of course - so I assumed the Suzuki was kinder in that respect. It's also rare to find one still honey colored used in a Vision which goes back to your great luck! :D Clean living and going to church has payed off brother!  :D  :D

Poverty has a bearing on the decision to reuse a stator , as well.

Well, I'm making good progress on this bike. Super thanks go out to Tiger for hooking me up with parts and some great advice, he saved me a bunch of grief. A shout out to Nightvision also for supplying parts. Had slight setback tonight though, the left side engine cover is junk. I found a small dent in the bottom of it while removing the stator and there is a crack right through the center of the dent. I could weld it if I have to but if I can replace the cover that is what I would prefer to do. This find kind of confirms my suspicions about the bike being wrecked at some point. If all goes well, I should have this thing up and running soon. Wish me luck.
