Title: Zeus helmets
Post by: alienation on January 18, 2013, 10:45:27 AM
So just wondering, do any of you have experience with a Zeus helmet? More particularly the Zeus 508. I received a good used one for free, but the face shield is a little worn, and I can't find a new one anywhere! Any ideas?

Also, has anyone custom painted a helmet? I'm thinking of doing it, but not sure how to go about it, especially with rattle can.

I searched "zeus 508 helmet" on E-bay and found a bunch of new shields.  ;)

I've worn a few used helmets in my day so I have no room to talk but.... many experts warn against buying used helmets. Or in your case wearing a free used helmet  :P Also, many recommend replacing helmets after 10 years old. These notions spark huge interweb debates but something to consider. I think these were low cost helmets so I guess I question their quality even when new. You can buy new moderately priced helmets today that may be better. I suppose I've become a bit of a helmet snob but my concern is your safety which ever helmet you end up wearing.  :D

Painting a helmet can be a serious thing, as it can cause some polycarbonate helmets to fracture.  DO NOT paint polycarbonate helmets!  Well, maybe with water based paints but not solvent based paints.  About 1973 one of my friends painted his polycarbonate helmet with acrylic paint, and tiny fractures showed up in the shell all around where the paint was.  I didn't see the helmet actually break but even a good polycarbonate helmet when cold can shatter on impact.

Thanks Rikugun, I got it from a friend who used it only a few times, and is only a few years old. The face shield is a little worn from his dog haha. But thanks for the input, I know new ones can be had for inexpensive, but free sounds like such a better price to me.
