Title: Tire load rating question
Post by: Kiwi on August 05, 2015, 05:59:27 PM
A quick question on tires.  The tire load rating, i assume that is per tire?
So, lets say the bike + rider is 500 lbs, then each tire needs to have a rating of at least 250lbs?
Or would each tire's rating need to be at least 500 lbs?

Thanks !

The load rating is per tire at the maximum rated cold pressure.

The laden bike weight is not always equally distributed, front to back.

The load rating for each tire should be visible on the side the DOT number is located.  That rating is for how much weight it can safely handle under "normal" conditions at the maximum advised pressure.

The Bridgestone tire on the front of my V is rated for 224Kg (492lb.) at max pressure of 41psi.  Under extreme braking most of the weight of the bike and rider(s) is transferred to the front tire, so that seems to me it should be adequate for some spirited riding. ;)
