Title: Rear Tire
Post by: mshowe on August 03, 2017, 05:05:50 PM
Any recommendations for a rear tire for my 83 XZ550RK?

I currently have a 120/90 V18 Metzeler Perfect ME

So much depends on how you are apt to ride (sedate or aggressive) and what is on the front.  If you are an aggressive rider then match the new rear to the grip level of the front tire, if you are a sedate rider then match the new rear to the grip level of the front.  This is for "just in case"  an event happens and you need to use the grip for an emergency maneuver.  Just saying' , you are dependent on your tires for grip, so don't skimp.  They are the only contact between you and the road.  Ride well, ride safely.

Don't know what your budget is but I am very happy with the Continental Classic Attack radials I put on last year. They were expensive but the bike has never handled better.

what size Continental Classic Attack did you put on?

I ride it "hard".  I shouldn't, but I do.   :)

Why shouldn't you ride it hard?  It IS a motorcycle. ;)

I put a 120/90 on the rear and a 90/90 on the front. I know the 83s had a 100/90 on the front but 90/90 Is what was available when I bought. As it is I like the way mine handles with the 90/90. And I do not recommend mixing radials and bias ply.
