Title: I've got an '83...PAINTED...Up-date
Post by: Tiger on December 09, 2006, 02:45:01 PM
:o Yep, thats right, I now have an '83 in my stable... 8) A Canadian red 'n white one with just under 10,000 mile's on the clock, (15k + Km's)....... 8) and, as is the norm', she has been laid up for a wee while and will need the carb's cleaned out... ::) and a new set of rubber...(Sorry no picture's as yet).
I was out buying part's for N_V and my-self, ('83 rear shock's), and the guy asks "would you be interested in an "83 I've just bought in a few day's ago"......  ???.....He continues..."This guy was moving house and decided he no longer wanted it, its been in his garage under a cover and is in decent condition...its out in the back yard"....... :o I go out into the yard and there she stands, shivering and looking sad under a coat of 3" of snow...YES people, that bright, white, cold, fluffy stuff... :o, after years of being inside and loved, now she is cast outside to fend for herself...WELL, what could I say, I mean, what would YOU   do, if at that moment YOU where ME....... ??? HUH...Bad enough at any time of year but at Christmas time you don't throw out a loved one...Then again, my first wife did....ME!!! but thats another story... ::) .

"Guy recon's she just needs a new battery John, what do you think" he says.
Well says I, There's no room at "The Vision Hotel" at present and I don't want her standing outside ALL winter...Hmmmm....."O.K". says he, "if you want her, give me a deposit and  I'll store her indoors until spring...no extra charge!!!"
So, I pay him a deposit and off she goes into the warmth...I will take in my spare cover, next week, to keep her clean... 8) 8) 8)

What ??? you don't like the nickname? ???

also rans:

"TheCanadian"
"NorthPole"
"BarberShopSpecial"
"Red On Rice"

I polled myself and "CandyCane" was the top pick   ;D

"TheCandian" was a close second, but if someone heard you say "I'm gonna hop on TheCandian for a quick ride" they might misinterpret your intensions....

on the other hand, hoppin' on a cane or pole might not be too good either  :o

boy...naming "Panther" was way easier

:) Well, last night, I decided to inform the wife... :o I'm pleased to tell you all that ALL my body part's are intact...nothing missing, broken, bruised or burst... ;D :D... ;) I have a very understanding woman behind me...don't I dear!!! I understand every thing she say's...may not carry out, but understand... ;)

However, as I only have a single garage which houses 2 x '82 Vision's (The Mistress  & Black Panther) and my Ski-doo snowmobile, I will have to finish the "Black Panther" project and sell her on to another new home that will take good care of her, before I can bring home "The Canadian"  for restoration... ;)

I really appreciate all the positive response...I love the red & white colour's.

DaveTN...The White Tiger project is for another day/Vision... 8)

8) Well, today I picked up "The Canadian", my red/white '83 Vision. I will keep you up-dated on her restoration progress, which will start in a few week's time. All the plastic's have to come off, along with the gas tank, and go down to the paint shop. I intend to keep her in the original red/white colour's... 8) I can then attend to the mechanical/electrical side. She is totally complete...Not a thing missing. At first glance, as I loaded her onto the trailer, from the wrecker's... :o The fuse box has already been up-graded, she need's a new battery and the tire's are shot. I may have to replace the windshield, although it isn't cracked/broken...just yellowed. I may try to polish it up or "tint" her black...we'll see. The clutch seems to work fine as do the brake's...as I say, I will keep you all posted over the coming month's... 8)
Why the hell am I sitting here smiling like an idiot when "The Black Panther" needs finishing before I start again...Ah well.....Its only time and money !!!  ;D ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

:) Went to see the guy who is going to re-paint "The Canadian" to-day...He is a customer of mine and has an auto body shop but wants to get into doing bike's... 8) Sooooo, we struck a "deal" that means I end up getting a fresh paint job done and he gets to sign his work on the plastic rail that runs underneath the seat... 8) She WILL stay in her original colour's of RED 'N WHITE, however, she will, like "The Mistress, be done in custom pearl finish to give her a more modern look 8) 8) 8)

I have already started buying some bit's 'n piece's... ::) Steering head bearing's, oil's, filter's, coolant, digital volt meter, cigarette lighter sorry, power outlet  ;)..Here we go, again :o ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

...and some... ;)

I started to strip her down...  :o The fairing, gas tank, body plastic's, etc are all boxed up for the journey to the paint shop... 8)

A wee rodent had a winter home in the headlight bucket and chewed the insulation off of the headlight wire's :o ::)...easy fix.

The battery I discarded...it charged up, but has a picture of Noah's Ark on the side ;D ;D :D :D :D... ;)

The carb's are off and need to be stripped and cleaned... ::)

The carb intake boot's are off and new one's acquired... 8)

I removed the seat, which is perfect. Cleaned and stored away, for now.

The gas tank has been repaired. I washed it out a few times and let stand overnight with a gallon of gas inside and sat it on some paper towel's...pleased to say NO leak(s) detected either from the repair's or the petcock... 8)

I will up-date as I go along... ;)

:o I can't let you see my girl half naked...pervert :o ;D ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D :D... ;) I'll post some soon.

:) I decided to do the steering head bearing's to-day...Prior to starting the strip down, I had prepped another lower triple tree unit. Cleaned, repainted and lower roller bearing installed.
I pulled the front wheel, disconnected the brake caliper's, slid the fork's out, removed the steering head nut and...the top half of the triple tree's, with the ignition switch/warning light's, refused to come off of the steering stem :o :o A few blows with a rubber mallet didn't budge it...wtf :o Soooo, sprayed a liberal dose of penetrating fluid over her, left for a while, came back, a few whacks from the old rubber mallet and.......nothing :o ??? O.K. time for the BFH. It took several well placed blows but, as you would expect, I won ;D ;D :D :D... ;) Removed the two head nut's and as I lifted the bearing cover, expecting ball bearing's dropping and rolling around the floor, I find that sometime in the past the previous owner HAD ALREADY replaced the steering head bearing's/race's ::) 8)...Anyhooo, cleaned out the old, s****y grease, etc, with a can of brake and part's cleaner, wiped everything completely clean, greased her up and installed the lower triple tree...another job completed... 8) I will have to wait for the upper tree (spare one), to come back from the painter's to install it , along with the riser's.

Who you callin' a pervert?!?  (Want a piece of candy?)

Looks like I'll be about a week behind you in getting a V restored.  Wish I had an 83, but I'm happy with my 82s.  At least V1 is nearly fully upgraded to 83 specs.   ;D

Figures - you go to all the work of tearing down the front end & the job was already done.  Oh well, sounds like the bearings needed cleaning & re-lube anyway.  Save some of the grease to send to kia!

??? What kinda candy mister ??? ;D ;D :D :D :D :D

I think, looking at the grease in the "old" bearing's, that it has been several year's since the upgrade was done...bare in mind she has stood, like a lot of "V"s, neglected for a lot of year's. The bearings don't show any sign of wear, however, I had already purchased the new one's, (and installed the lower one on a pre-prepped triple tree) so went ahead anyway.

I hope every thing goes well with your "new" aquasition and the "smiling all the way" drive home ;D :D :D

Hmmmm, I've got a new can of synthetic spray grease that would help Kia with his head problem :o ;D :D :D... ;)

didn't I say awhile back it would be nice if she came with the upgraded bearings?

you should've known...

I think if someone had to replace the races on the tapered bearings... it would be quite a job... the stock races had enough lip on them to pound out.... those tapered races don't

:) Decided to spend an hour on the '83 to-night... ::) ....and it took most of that hour to get the front cylinder spark plug removed :o :o :o It was in there SOLID!!! I tried penetrating fluid, etc ...NO way would it budge...Finally, I removed the rad, which I had already drained at the week-end and applied some heat from my, (little used), propane torch. It eventually started to give, but was so tight...so I sprayed a liberal amount of pen' fluid over the plug and left it for a wee while. It took a lot of muscle to get the plug halfway, so now I'm thinking...crossed thread...BUGGER!!! However the second half of the thread was easy. That plug had welded its self in and had been that way for a looooong time. The plug was totally useless and would never have been able to fire up the "V".
Now she has fitted:
:) New spark plug's.
:) New plug wire's.
:) New spark plug cap's.
:) New rad overflow tubing.
:) New coolant bottle overflow tubing.
:) I removed the coil's to install the two new plug wire's and therefore cleaned the ground wire under the left side one as well as the frame with 80grit shop roll... 8)
:) Removed, drained and washed out the coolant overflow bottle... 8)
:) Also washed the plastic rad' cover.. 8)

I was talking to my car mechanic friend about sparkplugs and he said that because you don't need to
replace plugs in cars for 100k they get very tight. He said the thing to do istake them out at about half
life (50k) and put anti-seize on them.

8) I change the spark plugs, on the "V", at the start of every riding season...regardless of age/mile's, etc and always use  a wee bit of anti-seize on them.

:) Managed to get some more done to the old girl... ;) However, not without a wee set back ::)
I decided to re-install the front fork leg's into the newly installed triple tree lowers. Once in, I used a spare top triple tree to get everything lined up right, (original at the paint shop). Hmmmmm, won't line up for some reason, checked and double checked everything...wtf ??? Pulled it all down again, put the lower t.t. on the bench to check the steering stem shaft against a spare and found it was out of alignment by a few degree's :o When I think back, this came off of a "V" that had sustained front end damage :o Call me stupid, I guess ;D :D :D :D Anyhoooo, problem resolved, damaged unit gone for scrap & original, with new bearing's, installed.
8) - Stator to R/R and R/R to C.D.I. hard wired in.
8) - R/R mounted on nice new bracket, (thanks Kevin).
8) - Rad' re-installed, hose's connected and nice, brite hose springs installed.
8) - Coolant overflow bottle, which was completely cleaned inside and out, re-installed.
8) - Installed new rad to coolant bottle & overflow tubing.
8) - Re-installed battery box.

I picked up the part's that went out for bead/sand blasting. The full fairing main bracket has now been painted a deep gloss black. The two aluminum part's that hold the foot peg's/rear exhaust bracket's, etc have been painted satin black...looking really sharp. The upper T.T. and riser's are at the paint shop...
Looooong way to go, but we are getting there ;D ;D :D :D :D... ;)

:) A wee bit more done... ;)

With the rad installed and all the hoses connected, I filled her up with fresh, long life coolant, not forgetting to top up the now ultra clean overflow bottle... ::)...No leak's anywhere ;)
Note: Once I have the carb's back and the girl up-and-running, I will "bleed" the system and check for leak's, once again.

Drained the oil from the motor...it was black.....and I mean BLACK!!!...removed the oil filter, which had seen better day's ::) and washed the housing and drain plug in my wee 5GL part's washer, (Christmas present from the wife 8) ) Re-installed the new filter, drain plug and filled her with fresh oil.
Note: This is, in effect, a temporary measure...Once she is up-and-running, I will drain the oil and change the filter, again.

I drained the rear drive oil, washed off the filler and drain plug's in the part's washer. Re-installed the drain plug and filled her up with synthetic...which runs way cooler.

During the strip down, I noticed that the black plastic guard, that goes from side-to-side and in front of the front carb, was missing. I had one in a box of part's I "won" on e-bay, a while ago...so that has now been installed.

The front foot peg's and side stand, which I had bead blasted on Friday, now have a coat of red oxide primer and will, eventually, get sprayed satin black... 8)

Once I get delivery of the new stainless steel braided brake line's, I will rip down the front brake system and overhaul that... ;)

:) I received the new S.S. braided brake line's (Galfer), new front footrest rubber's and fork seals.
The side stand, front footpeg bracket's and triangular aluminum pieces, that the rear footpeg's mount onto, have been painted in a low black gloss finish and re-installed onto the "V" along with the new front footrest rubber's.
I removed the front brake's completely and have stripped the calipers down and overhauled them. They will be re-fitted once I have done the front fork seal's, along with the rest of the brake assembly.
I've made & installed a new starter solenoid to starter cable and a new battery to ground, (Motor), cable as well. Both are made out of 6ga wire...
I'll call into the painters to-morrow and see how far he has got with my part's... ;)

:) Painted the inside of the fairing upper & lowers, matt black...gets rid of all the overspray ;D :D :D. Re-installed to the lowers, after the paint dried, ...the reflector's, the repaired/painted vent unit's and the black edging. I also re-installed the edging to the upper fairing. Re-installed the rear tail light back into the newly painted, (red), tail piece. The "O" ring that seals the petcock at the tank was in two piece's and covered in some kind of sealing crud ::) Cleaned it all up, chucked the "O" ring into the recycling box ;) and installed a new one. Re-installed the petcock to the tank using soc' head, (Allen drive), cap screw's, washer's and lock washer's...(old phillips drive screw's had been butchered by a previous owner at some time ::))...Oh, time to tidy up, get showered and off to my brothers pig roast and a few wobbly pop's...Mmmmmmmmmmmm... 8) Tomorrow's another day ;D :D :D :D :D... ;)

:) Real easy fix Brian...I had, in my garage, a few feet of 1" aluminum bar, (from another project), cut it to something like 3" long, (x the slot width), ...(poke the "Handle" end out to where you need it before drilling),
drilled a hole at the other end and through the movable vent, put through a bolt, your new aluminum arm and a hex nut...just to a point before the nut touches the alum' arm add another hex nut, take it down to the first nut and tighten the two together....approx' an inch from the nut/arm/bolt...drill a hole in the alum' arm only and a hole into the flap, an inch or so north...which you will install a nut 'n bolt...attach a spring to the arm and the bolt to act as a return mechanism...Bobs yer uncle, a functional vent unit... 8)

:) Good news/bad news corner... ;)

;D The Good...I fitted the back light unit into the newly painted tail light housing, (red), and re-installed back onto the "V". I also fitted two new stop/tail light bulb's, (#1157), nicely smeared with dielectric grease. Re-installed the two newly painted, under the seat side plastic's, washed 'n polished grab bar's, "Yamaha" logo'd grab bar bolt cover, (that still has the gold leaf finish intact!!!), the seat, (which is like new), washed 'n polished "glove box" and the two rear turn signal's with the "shorty stalks" from Kevin, (thanks Kevin),  again with new bulb's, (#1156). The stator is now installed in the left side engine cover, ready for installation.

>:( The Bad...There was an oil leak, coming from the left side fork leg ::) not a problem, as I have a set of seal's but just hadn't got around to doing them, as yet. Pulled out the offending leg, drained the oil...eeeeww, ugly dirty stuff...stripped the leg down, washed all the part's down in the parts washer, dried and ready for the new seal...except the new seal(s) are the wrong size :o ::)...just waiting for the Yam' stealer to open his door's so I can order a new set... ::)...bend over and spread 'em, sir :o ;D :D :D ...;)

:) Got a pair of new fork seals from the Yam' dealer...rouges 'n thieves ::)...Striped down the other fork and like the first one, the fork oil was a s***y brown goop... ::) So with every-thing drained, striped and cleaned, I set about rebuilding the fork's. Re-filled with new fork oil, air cap's fitted hand tight and fork leg's re-installed, air cap's tightened, and legs re-aliened and torqued down. The two brake calipers, having been serviced a while back, where fitted and the bolt's torqued. Front wheel installed, as was the newly painted front fender, (pearl white), then came the fork brace. The handle bar risers, (painted pearl white), where then installed along with the handle bars. Ignition switch installed into the top triple tree and also the idiot light unit was clipped in and wired up. Next came the gauge unit, (speedo/tack/fuel, etc, all tightened up with new nut's 'n washer's. Speedo cable installed. Last, but not least, I got the main fairing bracket, which has been sand blasted and re-painted black, installed.

I say last because by that time my wife and daughter wanted to know when I was firing' up the Bar-B for supper...supper ???...what the hell happened to lunch ;D ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

Filled a syringe full of brake fluid and filled the two caliper's via the brake line coupling hole.
Filled the master cylinder and pumped brake fluid thru' the two brake lines.
Re-attached the brake line's.

:) Little by little, she's coming together... ;)

As the left side cover was already off, I pulled the flywheel and did the starter clutch fix, as well as tighten the balancer/shaft nut's... ::)

Once that was all done I re-installed the left side cover, now with a new stator installed, (thanks N_V), wired it up to the R/R, etc and re-installed the shift lever.

Re-installed the battery box, battery and battery cover.

Fairing dash was drilled out with a hole saw to enable the installation of a volt meter. Dash installed onto the fairing frame and the volt meter was wired in.

Main upper fairing was lifted into place and the front indicators installed/wired up. Installed the windshield, which, like "The Mistress" windshield, has been painted, on the inside, low gloss black... 8) However, its got some deep "Battle scar's" and I'm on the look-out for a replacement...

I "loose fitted" the gas tank, installed the side plastic's and the fairing lowers...just to get a feel for the finished look (Need to install the carb's, once they are cleaned, before final installation)...

Maaaaaan, does she look sweeeeeeeeeeet in her new red 'n white paint....... 8)

this is what I did...

Muriatic Acid / Water bath overnight......then

I must have let the primer dry good, because when I stripped the wadded final coat off the headlight ring in a gallon can of used carb cleaner... the primer stayed on :o

muriatic acid & water will remove chrome? what was the ratio?
also, if there was water in the mix..sounds like it should have flash rusted....??
Title: Re: I've got an '83...PAINTED...Up-date

the solution was 20 gal water to 2 gal acid (10:1)

it did not remove the chrome, but it dulled it... maybe just took the outside layer off?

 8) SHE'S ALIVE, SHE'S ALIVE...  8) After more than ten year's I awoke her from her slumber's...... 8) 8) Thanks to CanadianLou for a great carb job. The Tim Parrot stator is charging and seems to be holding its own...considering the low price he sells for they are a good deal. Once the snow goes I'll take her out for a test ride...roll on spring!!! Phew...I gotta go shower... ;)

Hey there Tiger, with your luck in finding those beauties, could you find me an '83  with fairing? Colour doesn't matter as
I will most likely paint my ne (first) bike BINGO BLUE (a.k.a hammertone blue from Sherwin Williams).  I'm still thinking about the naked '82 if you still have it.

I might ask you to give me pop quiz or quick demo ride on the naked bike in end of April so I know what I'll be doing on my GEARING UP course.

:) In a little over three year's and seven Vision's, "The Canadian" is the only one I've acquired with a full fairing. However, at a swap meet, last year, I picked up a couple of sport type fairing's...one was a Vetter Sting, the other a Vetter as well... but don't remember the model. Brian_Mathewson has one and Lil'Blaster the other... 8)

:) I've had her running up to working temp's a couple of times now...slowly ridding her of the internal condensation, in the shape of white "smoke" coming out of the OEM exhaust system. She fires up within two chug's... ;)

The "New" Tim Parrot stator is showing 13.5 volt's at 1,500 r.p.m. idle and 14 volts at 3,000 r.p.m... 8)

I had an initial problem taking her off choke/enricher...Slide the lever to the right with the thumb and ...no change ??? Looking at the lever the cable hadn't returned, infact it had come out of the switch housing ??? Problem: The choke/enricher rod, at the carb, was sticking...against the wiring loom ::)...easy fix ;)

One dumb a$$ thing I did :-[ :-[ I had the gas tank resting on the work bench, (seat end down), so I could nip the two screws tight that hold the petcock to the tank, after replacing the original leaking one. Other than an old bathtowel and the old petcock, the workbench was clear when...the gas tank slipped from my grasp :o down she went...right on to the old petcock!!!
The nicely painted, shiny gas tank now sports a "Blackeye" in the shape of small dent, almost dead centre of the tank, about 4" from the seat... BUGGER, BUGGER, BUGGER... and other choice word's!!!

With the snow blown off of my driveway I just had to take her for a wee short ride... from the road back into my garage. A run of approx' 45 feet ;) and yep, the brakes, with there twin S.S. braided Galfer brake line's work real fine ;D :D :D.

I still have a couple of "tweek's" to do before her safety cert'...rear brake light not working...(switch needs adjusting), fairing lowers need installing, etc and she is good to go 8)

I can personally verify that it doesn't take cast-iron cojones to dent the tank by the seat...  (no, not on my Vision, it was a Suzuki 300)

Hey John,

Give me a shout on your tank issue, I have an idea I am turning over in my mind to get that dent out. Send me a pic so I can have a look at it.  If there is no crease I think we might have a good chance to remove it.

P.S. You're a brave soul wandering out there with the ice & snow we just got hit with.  Don't blame you though!

:) I key this in with mixed emotions :D :'( :-\...why you wonder??...I just waved goodbye to "The Canadian" a short while ago :o :o

Dibble, who recently joined the ROV, no sooner had his Vision on the road, (7 Km's I do believe!!), than his dad, (Bob), took off on her for a weekend of reacquainting himself with an old flame...MOTORCYCLING 8)

Dibble was now on the lookout for a Vision for his dad so he could get his pride and joy back!!!

Anyhooooo, to cut a long story short, after a couple of emails and phone calls, Steve, (a.k.a. Dibble) and his father turned up on my doorstep this morning, cash in hand and ready to ride. Deal done and not content to trailer her home, Bob donned his riding gear and headed North...Dibble in his cage behind him.

Bob is now the proud owner of "The Canadian"...I must admit last night Steve asked me if I really wanted to sell her :-\ to which I repled "No, but like all Visions she needs to be rode often". I'm content to know that Bob will look after her well and I wish him all the best.

:) Its kind of sad to loose her...but we now have a new member to our growing "Team OnROV"...and another crazy grin to add to the collection 8)

I bet the Mistress is just shining with happiness.  You know what they say about harems?  The first wife is always the most jealous one.  I think the Mistress would have given you many headaches once you would have turned most of your attention to The Canadian.

Otherwise she's coming along nicely.  I just got the fairing brackets installed today and loosely fit the upper fairing on.  She's coming along alright, slowly but surely I will most likely have a somewhat trouble free Vision for the next few years.

:) As you can tell in the picture, this was an early spring photo shoot. When you see her on a sunny day she really sparkles with the pearl white...although she wasn't fully finished off!!! She still needed a few touch ups here and there ;) Originally she was rebuilt for me, not to sell on.
However, I'm pleased to tell you that the new owner, (Dibble's dad), is racking the miles up on her and having a real blast. He has had a lot of positive comments from friends and work colleagues...8)...and Dibble has "Night Terror" back :o ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)
