I just mentioned to my wife that you just bought your seventh Vision, she then asked if you are married, I said "Not for much longer!" lol!!

Tiger just wants to make sure there are more Canadin visions than American Visions. Next he's taking on the Germans....

I don't need another one! I've had mine for almost a year, and its still not on the road yet. Its tough to work on a bike when you don't have a garage and I'm in TX so its raining all the time. I can't imagine having that many "projects."
Title: Tiger's Lucky #7...
Post by: Tiger on September 17, 2007, 12:42:17 PM
:) Just to clarify...I don't actually have 7 Vision's sitting in my garage ::) At present I do have "The Mistress", (#1), Which is an '82 and my "rider" as well as "The Canadian", (#6), an '83, which only need the carbs stripped, cleaned & rebuilt, are on premises.
I intend to take "The Mistress" off the road come season end, to do some needed T.L.C. My intention is to put "The Canadian" back on the road, for the first time in Eight'ish year's, and ride her for the '08 season.

#7 will be here this week and will be my winter project, again, once the season is over. Once she is road ready and "Christened" I intend to sell her to a new keeper. This is what I did last year with "The Black Panther" project. Lil'Blaster, "The Black Panther's" new owner, is having a load of fun with her. He came to the OnROV spring ride, Wolf's OnROV summer ride in Sarnia and Night_Vision's "Can-Am" ride in Syracuse a couple of week's ago 8) 8) 8)...If I could only get him to learn about computer's we would have another "registered" member ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

Vision's 2,3 & 4 have all been donor bike's, that part's have helped keep mine and other Vision's alive.

So, if any-one is looking for a sweet wee ride for next season...Let me know ;D :D :D :D :D :D... 8)

I'm always looking, but the wife doesn't let me buy very often.  I have 2 already and only one is on the road.  Black Beauty was a heck of a deal for only 250 dollars and I've already put around 500 miles on her in the short time that I've had her.  Once I get the petcock issue straightened out I'll put some more miles on her.

I'd love to have one of the Saved-by-Tiger bikes, but I have been saving up my pennies that I get to keep after my wife spends all my paycheck.  I'm working on getting a belt grinder for my knife making "hobby" that I do.  I have over 5K coming in by the end of the month (reenlistment bonus) and I am trying to get the 600 dollars that I need for the belt grinder worked into the budget before Sarah spends all of that money too.  ::)

I too spend far more money on my myriad of other hobbies (boats, guns and drinking; never at the same time, of course) I just bought an M-1 Garand and blew $80 on ammo for a range day so I need to save up before another bike hits the list.

My three hobbies that I spend money on (when my wife lets me  :-[): blacksmithing/bladesmithing (I've got several knifes that I can't finish until I get my belt grinder  >:(), my gaming computer w/lots of games (I build all my own rigs, YES I AM A CARD CARRYING COMPUTER NERD  8)), and my V's.

Let me get a price quote and I'll run it by the "boss".  ;)  Very tempting Tiger.  I saw what you did with Black Panther and I was really bummed for about a month that I couldn't get a deal worked out for her (the "boss" kept saying not right now and wouldn't budge).  She is a great looking bike.

:) Well, didn't get a lot done to #7... ::) Friday night the wee woman decides that we should go to Niagara Falls, New York on Saturday to do some shopping and go to our fav' eating house for a steak 'n fixin's ;D No complaint's from me ;D ;D :D :D :D... ;)

Sunday I went with a couple of the boy's to a vintage motorcycle swap meet and a wee ride afterward's... 8) Got back mid afternoon, parked the "V" and did a few chore's.

I decided that, before the sun went down #7 had to have a wash down :o She was filthy... ::)

Out came the "chemical tray" and the pressure washer. Soaked her from top to bottom, back to front in a degreaser/cleaner and pressure washed her down, then washed her down with a soap/water solution and pressure washed her down again...WOW!!! she doesn't look half as bad with all that dirt and grime gone... 8) Wiped her down and put her back into the garage as the sun went down on another day :(

She appears to be complete... 8) MAC exhaust system still has the decal on the top muffler!!! All the plastics are there and intact, clutch works, Brakes work, etc,
However...Tires have great tread but are cracked, battery is toast, gas tank has a leak, (Yet to check), Carb's, as we all know, will have to come off and be cleaned. The left side cover will come off so I can check everything out in there... ;)

All said and done, so far, I'm pleased with what I have acquired... 8) I also have two parties interested in her already... 8) Hmmmmm, by N_V's reckoning, I still have one life left :o ;D ;D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

Tiger, i've always been taught ( i've seen it in one of the manuals i think too) that you NEVER use high pressure water on a bike. there are seals that are not protected (like the wheel bearings) like they are on a car
Title: Re: Tiger's Lucky #7...
Post by: Tiger on October 01, 2007, 06:54:12 AM
:) Lucky...As a general rule of thumb, I would agree with you.
However, as this is a resto' project, ALL part's need to be cleaned prior to strip down. This will make stripping/handling/assesment much easier. All bearing's will be cleaned, checked and re-greased or replaced, depending on wear & tear ;) All the electrical conn's have to be cleaned/replaced/hard wired in, etc, etc.
It is the process that I have used for many year's and have done so with NO adverse effect's on all my vehicle's, including all of my Vision's...but I will say that misuse of a high pressure washer can cause all sort's of problem's on a motorcycle...reader's be warned :o ;D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

I was going to start a new thread, but this one seeemed to touch on it somewhat. My musings are the result of a observant yet off kilter mind so bear with me.
It always pains me when I here a guy say " I would ,could if the wife ,other half let's me". I always retreat into my head and think.. She didn't realize the strength of the addiction when she married you???
So now she puts the brakes on your pleasure. At least your not a drunk, drug addicted, cheatin sob. Yet I rarely, if ever here women say essentially the same thing about their hobby/vice.
I mean you spend 500-700 dollars on a bike that needs a little tlc and keeps you putzing around in the garage. It's not like you spend that every month, I know, I know, some of you do, and kudos to you and yours. the rest of us do it once/twice a year . Fix it, clean it, show it some love and it rewards us with that sweet sound when you hit the starter or the kicker. We have created something and it is good. It gives one joy.
So I hear a guy say The Statement and I ask him,  Why not, will she leave you or divorce you? Usually get a shrug and a, well no but she can get bitchy, or my all time favorite, she won't talk to me. Dude if thats all it takes to get her to not talk to you well, you get my drift.
A lot of times these guys make the really big bucks so I just can't fathom why the Mrs. would not allow him to enjoy his free time doing something he loves. For crying out loud they bust there hump all friggin day. Let the dude relax, and zen out while he's working on his latest creation he'll live longer. I have some thoughts as to why this is so but they aren't ever positive. Especially when you see the look in his eyes. Talk about painful to see.
So Tiger,Kudos to the new aquisition. If the Mrs is cool you have scored a good one, she understands.
I thank God for my wife. She realized early on I am an addict. My friends wifes just cluck cluck and give me "the look", you guys know what I mean.

:) My "old girl" is as good as gold really. I had her in the garage tonight givin' me a hand to bleed the front brake off... :o ;) but I do get your drift ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D.. :P

...as for #7, I cut out the original fuse box, which was actually in good condition, but it had to go. As with all the "V"s, I replaced it with seperate in line blade fuse holder's/fuses, including the one in the headlight for the rad' fan. All are hard wired in using butt conn's that use semi translucent shrink tube that has an adhesive on the inside AND contains a solder ring in the center...Put your two wire's in, shrink down, put heat on the solder ring till it melts, (low heat solder), and your done. Seals moisture out with a soldered joint...cool, eh!!! (Just another of the product's that I sell ;) ).

I made up a new battery to motor ground wire, using 6Ga cable. Soldered and shrink tubed the connection's... 8)

Bleed off the front brake...works well... :D :D :D... ;)

According to the guy I bought her off, he said "The gas tank leak's...badly, gas just pour's out...it has been lined, but still leak's"... ::) Anyway, the petcock was in a box of odd's 'n end's, so I refitted it to the tank and dumped a gallon of fresh gas into it.......Leak's alright, not the tank thankfully 8) but the petcock, it just spews out gas from all over!!! Doesn't matter which way you set it...run/prime/reserve, it run's out...as well as every joint/seal. I'll buy a rebuild kit from sirius, as I'm up there way this week.

Pulled the spark plugs out...they are sooooooo shot, byebye, buy ;) I'll get new wire's/cap's/plug's for her, as normal... 8)

The air filter is new 'ish, however, it is for an earlier '82 without the vacuum assist ::) I'll get the Fram #3903 from Walmart and do a custom filter... 8)

Well thats enough for tonight...Time for a beer, I think...Cheer's ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

:) Today I picked up,from Sirius, a petcock repair kit and a set of exhaust gasket's, from a local bike shop I got a yard of premium plug lead/cap's/plug's... 8)

Tonight I stripped the petcock down... ::)...everything inside from the "O" ring, that sit's in the run/prime/reserve lever, to the diaphram was completely shot and I mean shot. Not suprising that gas leaked out all over the thing ::) The inside was also full of white oxidised crud...So I scrubed it seriously clean and rebuilt the unit. Before the strip down, there was no "friction" when you turned the lever to run/prime/reserve...there is now ;)
Once stripped/cleaned/rebuilt, I reconnected it to the gas tank. I used a wee smear of red silicone to make sure the seal is tight... 8) I've left it to cure and will put gas into the tank again tomorrow to make sure all is completely sealed.

I connected the new plug cap's to the wire's and installed the spark plug's. I'll connect up tomorrow night...remembering to clean the ground wire at the left coil frame connection  ;)

Thats it for tonight...no hurry ;D :D :D :D :D... ;) Time for a wobbley pop...cheer's 8)

Actually, MY XZ is in a similar sit as the one that you just picked up.  It's out in Colorado Springs, running gear is sitting on the sidestand in a 10X20 storage unit with a radial arm saw to port and a bandsaw to starboard.  All of the plastics are in a very large box and in the 10X10 behind the first one, up on a shelf to port of the 2 XS850's in various states of disassembly and the completely disassembled GS750 below the box.  The Vision is naked, with the carbs in the 10X in another box.

About pressure washing, whenever I am about to do anything major to any of my vehicles, I take the wand in hand and hose it down.  If that is going to be taken part and most of the pieces renewed (replaced, cleaned, repacked) anyway, a little water won't hurt it in the long run.  I can't imagine what the front end rebuild on my Exploder would've  been like if I:
1) hadn't pressure cleaned the left and right wheel wells, steering linkage and knuckles, and front I-beams and pumpkin.
&
2) hadn't applied copious amount of penetrating oil to all of the nuts and bolts that would need removed.

I'll likely take the wand to Brandi before I tackle the valve adjustment.  Gonna try black RTV in place of the valve gasket this time...   ;)  And I'll be putting fresh oil and filter on in the process.

Ya know, there weren't that many Vision made in the first place, and that means there may not be a huge number left, so what Tiger does is all goodness.   ;D  I've seen more Visions in boneyards than any other place, but I hope to change that before too long.

:) WhaHoooooooooooo, She's alive, she's alive, she lives again...  8) Jump started her from the car battery. It took a wee bit of coaxing, seeing the fuel pump/carb's where bone dry...but after a couple or so mis-start's, she eventually fired up. Adjusted the idle, once she was off choke and she purred at 1300 r.p.m. real sweet...and with the MAC's, she grrrrrrrowl's real nice when you wind on the throttle :o ;D :D :D :D :D :D
I rebuilt the petcock, however, she still runs gas no matter which way the lever point's...I think I need another one...Anybody have an '82 petcock for sale/trade ??? ???

I'll say this, for me it's much easier to bring home project bikes, than it is to work on them.  It's a weakness of mine for sure.  I can say that I'm trying to get a handle on it.  Most of my collection sits their doing nothing, while my primary rider's keep me busy, riding and maintaining them.  Also, the space that these rarely touched bikes take, could be free'ed  up for other uses.  Looking back I wish I would have been better at grabbing something, work it over, sell it, go on to the next one.  Like my car friend says, don't fall in love with the inventory, and always be ready to sell something, it will let you buy something, you haven't had.

Still trying, not to hard, to find all those damn ball bearing's that "danced" around the garage floor... ::)

Stripped the fork's down...and thought "Ah, what the hell" and ripped apart the brake caliper, as well ::)

She now has a head full of tapered bearing's, a new set of fork seal's with fresh 15 weight fork oil and the caliper is rebuilt and ready to re-install, re-connect and bleed... 8)...maybe later to-day ;)

Got a magnet on a telescoping wand?  Easiest way to collect them balls, even in places you can't see them.  Prolly turn up treasures that you forgot that you had, too...  And, after all, you've swapped in tapereds to replace them, so other than providing a recipe for skating around the garage while carrying something heavy...   ;)

:) Not really... I only have a single car garage, that I sweep/vacuum weekly. I hate bit's and piece's of shite left laying around the place after each and any job I do, Vision or otherwise.
My parent's (& grandfather), where ex-armed force's, so my early year's where guided by... "A place for everything and everything in its place"... 8) but, as you say, having new taper's installed, I've no need of them 8)

:) Anyhow... #7 now has a new battery, purchased at Walmart yesterday, at a cross border shopping trip to Niagara Fall's New York with the wee woman ::)...$32.78...and a 1.5 amp float charger that has the "hard wire" lead for your "V"s battery and one with pos/neg crocodile clip's, for only $18.44 (BTW, the same battery here in a Canadian Walmart...$76.00...The same charger is $46.00... >:()

Premium plug wire's/plug cap's and new spark plug's are fitted, along with a "custom made" (in my garage), air filter 8). Rear drive oil is drained & changed...I think I'm going to need another winter project the way this is going :o ;D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

 :) Did a wee bit more to-night... :)

Removed the battery box and disconnected the R/R from the back of it and at the two white plastic connection's.

Made a bracket out of 1" aluminum flat bar for the R/R. I removed the screw that hold the rear inner fender on the left side and installed the bracket at this point.

Cut off the white plastic connector's, (stator & R/R), re-connected, using 14ga, 8", bridging wire's...hard wired at the stator end but with fully insulated male/female spade connection's.

Installed a battery tender, quick connect pigtail, to the battery terminal...Yes, the new owner will be getting a battery tender as part of the deal 8)

Put her all back together, fired her up...everything seem's to be working O.K...Charging at 14.4 volt's 8)

Yeah, that's one reason I'm tempted to try a total teardown and rebuild.  That way hopefully I'd know everything that could be done had been done and I'd know about all the nooks in the crannies.  A friend of mine in high school got I think an 80s Corolla or something similar.  He bought it, drove it home and tore it down to base pieces.  It sat in pieces in his back yard for months slowly going back together but when it was done it was reliable and he knew all about it.  Unfortunately I barely have room to do an oil change anymore, let alone bike parts all over from a teardown. :(

:) Aelwulf, my first "V"..."The Mistress", originally went into a shop when I got her...Full service/tune up/safety, etc, before I turned a wrench on her. She ran well BUT I spent $750.00 to get her there ::)
I vowed that, given that I have a garage, tool's and some mechanical knowledge, I would not do THAT again. This was well before I found the ROV site... ;)
Since I found the ROV site and its ever expanding family, I have had a certain amount of good fortune and fun, concerning "V"s... ::) ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I have made a lot of "Key board" and "direct contact" friend's because of our group. It is always a great pleasure to join in on ride day's/week-end's, with like minded people.
This site makes owning and wrenching on a Vision much, much easier...and sometimes, fun to... 8)

My advice, to every one new to his or her "V"... for what it is worth...Get to know your "V" by doing one job at a time, on a week-end... 8)
The simple things first...Oil/filter change(s) one week, plug's/wire's/cap's on another, etc...build this up a little at a time and your confidence will grow with your week-end maintenance...as your confidence grow's, then you can try something more demanding...Balancer nut to be tightened, starter clutch bolt's, fork oil seal's, whatever... 8)...but above all have fun with your Vision ;) 8)

Yeah, kind of how I started with mine.  To get it running and all I had that guy in the Springs work on it (still need to post his info in case any others want/need it, he's apparently been a name in Yamaha off-road racing at one time judging from the walls of his garage).  I 'tipped' him about $20 an hour for the roughly 11 hours he worked on it, and paid for all the parts so it came out to just under $800.  He did good owrk and made some impromptu touches (such as adding a plastic cover for the fuse box I'm hoping will still fit over it with the new one).  I have tools for the most part and a modicum of mechanical experience (if I can work on $20 million+ jets I hope I can work on an old motorcycle), not much in garage space anymore but should be enough. So, we'll see... :) First job coming up will be the fuses.  Then probably the front end for the head bearings since I seem to need to replace the ones in the front wheel now as well if I'm hearing right.

:) Yesterday, I decided to remove the MAC system as it leaked at the rear head ports...due to the fact that I didn't get it all lined up properly last time ::) So, off it came...Thinks I, you may as well remove the back wheel and change the tire as the sidewall's are all cracked...and you can check out the brake's, etc.
I removed the adjuster nut from the shitty looking rear brake rod...something just didn't look right with it ::) Then it dawned on me :o  Sometime in its life, the brake tensioner bar rear bolt must have let loose...the, whichever PO had straightened out the rear brake rod, you could see some of the "kink's" where it had been hammered out ::) But worse :o ...about three inches from the wee blimp in the bar that holds the adjuster spring at the adjuster end of the rod, the bar must have snapped!!! Some ingenious idiot had ground down two flats in the bar and welded it back together :o Off it came and into the garbage pile it went...A replacement I do have ;) On further inspection, yes he/she had replaced the bolt/nut...but left the front one alone ::) So I removed it and, yep, it was rusted to shit...more for the recycle bin ;)
I cleaned all the paint off of the ten' bar and "new" brake rod, put on a coat of red oxide primer and once dry, a coat of an industrial grade, aluminum enamel paint and left over night to dry/cure.

Removed the cotter pin, rear axle nut and spacer, knocked out the axle shaft which, once removed, was all badly rusted...recycle bin!!!

Tire, and balance weight, removed...no problem there, other than the inside of the rim needs a good clean before I mount another tire... ;)

So, my MAC system removal was really worthwhile...in the long run ::) ;D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

I'll clean up the rim, mount and balance the tire, clean out the brake drum and brake's and put the "rear end" back together, with new ten' bar nut's/bolt's and re-install the MAC's, (properly, this time!!!)...Sometime this week, but def' not tonight ::) ;D :D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

Naw, go right over the halfies, taken off of the old gasket.  I'll report back with findings next week...probably get to the task this Sunday or next Monday.

As it turned out, I did not get around to doing the valve adjust until this past May.  What I did with the RTV is use it to make the OEM gasket (reused) stick in the groove of the cover.  Then put a thin film of the RTV on the flat of the head.  I ended up having the cover off 3 more times, when the head cover bolts broke the threads loose from the fittings on the cam  journals.  I ended up putting helicoils in ALL of the fittings.  The RTV held the gasket in the cover, and I reapplied it each time on the flats of the head, no leaks and no squeeze-out.  Oh, and I repainted the head cover after treating it with oven cleaner.
