Fuel filter installation tricks?

This may be a lame question, but how have you guys gone about installing inline fuel filters?  I have an 82 Vision and there  isn't much room to squeeze in an inline filter.  I thought I had the solution.  I cut the fuel line very near the metal "guide" it passes through before going under the tank and attached the filter.  Then from the petcock to the filter I used some fairly flexible line and used enough line that it could come out of the petcock and loop once before attaching to the fuel filter.  Maybe there is a shorter filter you guys use, but the one I found is so long that if I try to attach without such a loop, the fuel line kinks.  My loop method worked fine initially, but now it is starting to kink and seems to be cutting off free flow of fuel.  Next step on this path is to try some stiffer (but not too stiff) line.  Does anyone else have a better technique?

Thanks!  VK

Thats the way I did it I had to change the line  after three years. All v I have seen with a filter , have a varation on this theme. This time I used clear plastic line, it hardens up and resists kinking. (I hope !)

hi
Years ago when I put an inline filter in I did it the same way you did VK and my hosr from the inline filter to the tank is not that extra long, but to avoid kinks and to make you bend I put a spring inside the hose. You want the spring to be the same size as the in side part oif the hose.Never had any problems over the years. Also I did the same thing on other hoses so the hose would not collapse. Years ago I found out if you wanted the correct hose with all the bends from Yamaha it cost $$$ and was always on back order. In fact my dealer suggested this, great guy. Besides NAPA was closer and cheaper

Hope this helps

Does an 1983 Vision have a fuel filter or is the set-up like the '83?

Lucky

Here's my trick:
I remove the line at the fuel pump and install the fuel filter between the pump and the bracket that the line passes thru, then it's a normal bend to the petcock.

I buy these very small plastic filters, about 2" long and about3/4" around and has a sintered bronse element.  the lines should be clamped, so I'll usually twist some bailing wire for the clamps.

Franz, the 83 carbs have a second fuel line for return gas going back to the petcock, the supply line is the one that gets the filter.

I have used the same filter as Lucky only I installed mine immediately after the petcock outlet with the plastic inlet tight against the petcock with a very small rubber joiner hose.  I easily made the bend above the filter and back to the fuel pump.

I wanted the filter visible so I could keep track of my sediment accumulation in the little cone shaped transparent filter and know when to give the petcock and filter a preventative draining.

i am doing the short hose bit to attach the fuel filter, but i was told the hose can be as long as you want coming out of the gas tank, so you could actually run the hose in a loop with the fuel filter?

I prefer the extreme short version out of the tank (one inch)so I have a natural support for the filter and not too much dangling gas line before getting looped back over the filter (above) and through to the fuel pump.  More is not always better.  I like to achieve both style & functionality if possible.
