It's on the Road! But with no 1st gear

Any ideas why I would suddenly lose first gear on my 82 Vision? It has been sitting for a couple of months while I struggled with a problem with the rear cyl not viring (turned out to be a bad TCI). I finally got to ride it for the first time in ages yesterday, and to my dismay, 1st gear seems to have vanished! I can't get the bike to go past neutral. What is this a symptom of? Stuck clutch? Improperly adjusted clutch? Something else entirely?

check the clutch adjustment according to the manual.

will it go into 2 thru 5? if so i'd guess some thing is mechanicly bent/broken/frozen.

You may have some frozen clutch plates, which is not nessacarily terminal.  try rocking the bike forward & back while putting normal pressure on the shifter & working the clutch in & out.

Just a note, when i got my V, the clutch was frozen solid, the bike had been neglected for 9 years. some gentle rocking back & fourth finally freed it up.  i've never had the right side engine cover off.

I did find while riding the bike if I'm slowing down and shift down at the right moment it does pop into first. At a stand still it will not. Looking more like a partially frozen or mal-adjusted clutch?

Lucky

it does sound like it's in need of an adjustment or even a new cable (they will strech over time)
