Drying the tank out

In the middle of doing a POR job on the tank. Just finished the first step and have washed out with water. Wondered how others who have done this managed to get their tank completely dry after the washout with water procedure. They say use a hairdryer but  surely that will take forever? The tank opening and even petrol tap is badly situated to drain out the water as it is. I would have thought that leaving any wet areas under the coating would promote rust in the future.

I thought about leaving it out in the sun for a couple of days with the top open?

Any ideas?

Have a great 2006!

Hey Glyn,

I just used a blow dryer myself on low heat (even then the tank got hot).

Just taped the trigger on the dryer to the on position and let it sit for a few hours.  it got it nice and dry in no time.  I did have the tank upside down (to make sure there wasnt any water in the lower parts-and to help dry quicker by spreading the water out more on the roof.

Seemed to do the job pretty well.

I left the petcock out and ran a hose from the shopvac (exhaust) to the filler hole. I would change position of the tank every few hours. The hardest part is letting it dry for hours possibly days. I let mine dry for a week before I finished the por treatment. There will be some flash rust no matter what you do so don't get discouraged if you see some flash rust from the filler hole. It's so hard to be patient but it's important to make sure it's absolutely dry.

And I'll save Lucky the time "remember stired not shaken" when it comes to the por 15 mix.  ;D

Thanks for that guys. Seems like patience is the key.

I only got one  250ml can of the Std USA sealer with my kit. Looking at the size of the tank I'd say at least 1 litre was needed? What amount have other people used?

Cheers

The standard kit came with an 8oz can. I ordered and extra 8oz just to be sure and it was worth it. I know for a fact it got covered well.

I think the kit is a little light on the sealer as well, but most ppl here think it's too much & worry about puddling.. i don't get it...

The Vision obviously has one of the biggest tanks surface wise. With all the twist and turns within the tank I just wanted to make sure it was covered. An extra can is good cheap insurance not to have to do the job more than once. I didn't have any problems with puddling. Again it takes patience letting it dry once you put the sealer on.

I'm one of the ppl that recently did tank and had leftover por and even some minor puddling after I poured it out. My tank was in pretty good shape to begin with

I got the cycle tank kit.

"U.S. STANDARD TANK SEALER? (8 oz) creates a permanently sealed tank (Seals up to a 7 gallon tank)"

Vision fuel capacity is 4.5 gal, yeah it does have two sides but what cycle tank doesn't (don't see too many 7 gal. boxes sittin on top of a frame)

If you do decide to get extra..... you may want to line up some other stuff you want to coat/seal/paint.

most funnest part of the por job is trying to keep that marine wash from leaking out petcock hole or cap. Tell ya right now, that stuff washes the glue off duct tape!

Looks like another 8oz can would be a good precaution. I don't mind a bit of waste. I made a plate with a gasket for the petcock hole and bunged the top with a fancy supermarket plastc bag and insulating tape. Leak free of the first cleaner and second rust converter washes. I cleaned out with a hosepie running full bore through the tank for quite a while. Great waste of water!

My paint is flaking aroungd the filler (before the wash!) due to the action of the filler cap. Has anyone put either some of that carbon fibre look alike stuff (or similar) around that area to stop ingress of rust and to smarten it up?

Putting the spares bike stator into my on road bike. Similar mileage to the one that blew. With the help of the oil cooler do you think I could get another 10,000 km say (stator insulation  looks OK), or is it just not possible to tell??

As for drying I ran an old vacuum cleaner that had a connection at the back for plugging the vac hose in for blowing.  This provided a low pressure high volume air supply.  Don't use it in vacuum mode.  This will suck air from the tank thru the motor normally (very bad from an explosion point of view).

I found that there was more POR than needed.  It is not very viscos (sic) so it won't run very fast.  Turn the tank slowly allow 5-10 mins of standing between turns.  It took me a few hours to coat all of the insides and some time to remove all the excess.
I'll fix it, pass me a bigger hammer!

When I treated my '83 tank I had a little of the sealer left over.? So wish I had had the ensight to brush a little of the left over onto the outside top of the tank in the area that is under the gas cap when the gas cap is in? place.? After 22 years, this area is looking rusty, discolored and stained with gasoline varnish.? Sealer in this area would have been a nice professional touch.? Something you future V tank PORers might want to consider.? Cheers.

in addition to that area, i also took my cap apart, wire brushed the corroded metals & used the POR on those as well.
