When I replaced the oil seals in my 82' I noticed that the "European models" specify SAE 10w-30 engine oil in the forks.  A bit more research showed the same seal part numbers etc.. for both "European" and "Other" models.  I went with 10w-30 Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil (carefully measured in cc's to ensure equal amounts in both forks)  and have been happy with the results.

The reason I used atf intead of fork oil or engine oil, is that I had a leak.(ring around the tube) atf has conditioners to make seals plump up again. Fork oil does not that I am aware of.
