Polishing the insides of a carb......

I am going to get my carbs cleaned soon and was wondering if polishing the INSIDES of the carbs will make any improvements to fuel flow/mixture?  I was thinking of polishing the insides of the float bowls, inside of the butterfly throats, and so on.  I will also be polishing the outside just for cosmetic reasons.  I plan to purchase a can of AUTOSOL Metal Polish ($62/ 2.2 lbs.)  It really brings a mirror/chrome like finish to aluminum.

Any thoughts guys?

Lots of work for small increase in fuel/air flow and even the outside wont be seen by most viewers. Don't think carbs are made of aluminum. JMO.    BDC

The carbs are aluminum, i polished a set for Tiger.

as far a polishing the inside, your air & fuel circuts mostly pass thru jets, so polishing anything won't help.  the cleaner the better of course.

you could do it just to say you have... but no performance gain.

when you polish the outside of the carbs, CLEARCOAT THEM.  i wish i had on Tigers.  his was mostly done with dremil wire & buffing bits.  next time (if there is a next time) it gets the bench grinder with the sissal wheel...  that's how i did a lot of Kittys bike.

:) AUTOSOL Metal Polish has been around for more years than I care to remember :o ;D :D :D :D :D It is still a great product, however, it is quite a coarse compound. Go very carefully and make sure you remove all and any residue(s)....or you will have to pay Canadian_Lou to re-do them for you!!! :o ;D :D :D :D :D :D... ;)

As with the other replies, it won't give you anything extra worth all the effort...except a nice piece of semi-hidden 'BLING'... ::) :D :D :D :D :D

I think I will just stick to polishing the exterior.  BLING should be SEEN!

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work! I've never tried it (or know of anyone) so I won't be so bold as to say it won't work. Even if you concentrate just on the horn/throat & venturi (where most of the air flows), that represents quite a time investment. What if it does nothing, or worse, makes it run poorly!?

The following from a 2 stroke technology class I took and probably doesn't apply here but for what it's worth...

Regarding polishing, the instructor claimed power increases could be realized by polishing the combustion chamber, piston top and exhaust port. However, he didn't advocate polishing inlet & transfer ports to a high degree - just smoothing and removing rough casting flash etc.

His theory was slight surface irregularities (and subsequent turbulence) helped keep the fuel mixture atomized all the way to the combustion chamber. This probably doesn't apply to the short inlet tract on the V but I wouldn't mess with it. Besides, the carbs are generally quite smooth where air flow is - unless yours are pitted from corrosion?

If you had a spare set to experiment with it would make an interesting project though.  :)

 8) 8)Yes Bling only on the outside, Inside Bling is Performance Mods!! As Rikugun says.
However if you are going to Polish Carbs for show I have a couple that need a shine.....

Autosol is great but polishing the inside of the carbs is a waste of time.  To get the best exterior finish, dip them in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Polishing inside of carb throat is a really bad plan.  Imagine the very small air passage openings there filled with polishing compound.
