Coolant SEAL is about to be a deal breaker! Grrr

This Vision is my buddy's bike.

The coolant "failure" hole keeps crying (the one towards the front of the pump).

We replaced the seal once (badly) and it cried again.

We replaced it AGAIN (correctly) and it STILL cries coolant.

WHAT. THE. HECK???

It's to the point now where my buddy wants to sell it.

$1000 for the running bike + parts bike.

Either you know what should be done next or you want to buy it.

Please advise.

In the diagram that you linked to, there are 2 seals, number 4 and number 7. I believe that number 4 is the one that causes coolant leaks, and number 7 is the one that would cause oil to come through that same hole, did he replace the right one?

I'm curious what the difference between replacing it badly and correctly is, can you elaborate? I'm about to go through this ordeal myself and don't want to spend the $24 bucks for the seal more than once if I can help it.

Sorry about the bad luck :)

RobinDean

Replacing badly = banging it in on an uneven surface so that it gets chewed up.

Replacing correctly = using a flat sided utensil as a drive while gently tapping the UTENSIL with a rubber hammer, keeping everything flush and safe.

I'm worried that we used the wrong one. Who knows. I don't think oil is leaking in but am uncertain.

Hopefully my friend is signing up for an account so he can chime in.

The parts fiches at yamaha-motor.com are the first place to look for what part numbers are what. The water pump seal is a number that's been superseded and other posts on the forum have mentioned that there's a material difference between the new and old versions of that part.

I'd be curious if you guys used the part with the 00 or the 10 towards the end...

Have your friend join, that's a pretty easy repair to want to sell the bike over. The more the merrier, we can always use more friends on the ROV forum!

He should replace  #4 and #7 # 9  is no longer available , I'm  told.
I replaced a pump seal in '98 , its not hard , I can't imagine what you are doing wrong. Do you have a manual ?

Speedandsportinc.com has 38 of them in stock (#9). I was strongly considering getting one just in case. I've been thrilled with that website lately, they specialize in NOS discontinued parts and they usually have what I'm looking for. It's a great resource for anyone working on a 30 year old Yamaha :)

had same problem with mine and found the bearing for water pump shaft to be the cause, replace that while you are doing the seal, and try to use a press to install new seal and bearing, any machine shop or dealer/service center should be able to do it for a relativly cheap price.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right, for our families and friends depend on it. Safety always comes first!

The bearing for the impeller shaft is a open 6000 and oil seal is 10x21x5.
