OK so I have the starter out but can't break the two long screws. Is it ok to put vise grips down by threads to break lose? What have you all had to do???

Sable

I used PB Blast on both sides, where the threads are and the end cap and let them sit for about 15 or 20 minutes... I don't think it would be a problem if you use the vice grips, but just be careful not to bend the screws. I've yet to find a suitable replacement for these bolts. I got a starter motor that craped out on me that been waiting to be rebuilt, the screws are so stripped out, they almost look like allen head cap screws ;D

If you grab the screw threads with a Vise Grip tool you'll probably never get the screw out.  Try and grab the screw head with the Vise Grip tool and see if you can break it loose.

I got mine out exactly as you described GT.  i started to do it on the head of the screw, but the screw was long enough that the amount of twist in te whole length was a bit disconcerting.

AIRPLANE STEVE

I'm a true believer in PB. I won't leave home without it.
I've got to tell a quick story. I had a friend who was telling me about how great this new stuff called PB Blaster worked. He said, "It's got caterpillar action." I couldn't figure out what the heck he was talking about until I read the can. It has capillary action. Now whenever I'm telling one fo my friends about this great stuff, I tell them about its great caterpillar action.         Glad it worked.   Airplane Steve
