yes, but there is no need to even see the numbers on the bottom of the shim unless you know you are out of spec.

I guess many (some) have managed to do a shim exchange with just removing the valve covers, although i cant imagine how. To aid my over size , arthritic hands and 66 year old eyes, I pull the air box, remove the bolts that hold the radiator in place , remove the front exhaust pipes,  the top rear motor mount , loosen up the rear exhaust pipe (MAC) and , after putting a jack under the engine , remove all the engine bolts , except the lower rear one and  lower the front of the engine down a bit to provide clearance for the rear valve cover . Its a lot of work , but there just isn't  sufficient room back there for me to do the work. I've tried it and it drove me nuts. If I could touch it, my hands were in the way and I couldn't see what I was doing. If you can do it without all that , more power to you! :D :D

Oh yes, apparently a flexible magnetic tool will help immensely in getting the shim out when you need to do that.  Something like this I imagine

Wish I had the idea, it would have saved me a bunch of trouble...

I have a small instrument style screw driver , with a magnet on the end , that I use to pull them out, once I have used another small screw driver, in the notch in the bucket to pop them up.
Your magnet tool would work too. I have a larger magnet on an extendable handle  but its a bit awkward.

they are 29mm pads on the vision, and i have never had to pay for shims yet. call up your local shops and ask if they will do a swap because your old ones are still good.

Funk, you have to check the clearances first.... out of the 8 valves, you may find that only four are out of spec.

then, you may find out that you can use (swap) some of the ones you already have... you may find that you only need two or three "new ones"

one valve may be tight, has a 255 shim and needs a 250..... another valve may be tight, has a 260 and needs a 255... well, you now have a 255 to swap right?

unless you have an assortment of 250's - 265's, you'll have to follow the procedure in the book and fill out the table to see if you can reuse any of the ones you already have, and then figure out which ones you'll need to buy.

If you remove the top motor mount, the one that ataches to the rear cylinder head, it gives alittle more working room when removing the rear valve cover.  Alittle Yamabond at the corners and under the half circles helps keep the gasket in place when replacing. Take a look at the rubber plugs in the top of the cam bearings if they are hard replace them, they are nesessary for good oil pressure to the cams.

Record shim measurements and where they are so next time you check the valves you know what you need before you go looking for shims.

I measure every shim and write on it what it is. Some shims don't measure what they say, and if you use used shims the stamp on the back may be gone.

good tips, thanx Brother!!

Funk,
I, too, have a set of shims and will swap if you buy the mailer envelope and postage both ways. PM me the sizes you need and I'll mail them to you. You send yours and the cash back to me in the same envelope.

I measure every shim I handle and I have not yet found one that had worn to the third decimal place.
