So I got a 1982 XZ550 for 18K at 6750 miles here is what I did to Maeve to get her to what she is now, in no particular order:

Lined the gas tank with POR-15
Tip: Go to your local pool supply store and you can get 4 gallons of muratic acid for about 30 bucks INCLUDING the $20 deposit on the bottles, and use some of that to remove all of the rust form your tank. because the stuff in the kit is a little wussy.

Replaced the starter seal and Brushes

Tacked in the backs of the OEM starter clutch bolts before they started coming loose

Removed all connectors in the charging system

added a ground wire to the case of the R/R

Replaced Stator with a Ricks stator

Opened, cleaned and greased ALL electrical connections

Got a AGM battery for her

Rebuilt the ignition cylinder using epoxy and the bottom of a pill bottle (sell me a old plastic cup for 80bucks...)

Got new gas cap rubber from a stant gas cap for my '02 Dodge Dakota

Wired in my Audio system
(has 12v and 5v for my gadgets like a USB key board light, now map light)

Piaa H4 light bulb

Full synthetic engine and gear oil (the gear oil helps the bike move ALOT easier cold)

Dual weight synthetic fork oil (20-30)

Carb cleaning and balancing replacing the acc. pump line and mixture screw o-rings

Replaced the buss fused with blade fuses

new spark plugs

organized and repacked the headlight wiring (its no longer a crazy mess in there!)

Future projects:
A good horn
Analog oil pressure gauge with warning light
Charging system warning light
Fork Brace
fork springs
Xenon light
Stainless steel brake line
Corbin saddle
Make a new stainless steel exhaust with a titanium slip on (think predator with scavangeing)
Fuel injection (how long will those carbs work till I gotta mess with them again?)
small rack on the tail section
taper bearings on the steering head
Mount one of my GPS units
possibly a 1/4 fairing
Repaint tank to OEM red (previous owner did a crappy job and used a crappy maroon that Kinda matches)
Niskil coat the cylinders and 12-1 pistons
steel valve seats
and when my rear shock wears out, a one from works
Loves to over think things.

good job, kid.  Now you have time to think things over while riding.  enjoy
