Now that is gotten cold my starter is making what i consider an odd noise.
It reminds me of when i had a remote controlled car as a kid and the gears started making a high pitched noise.
It's high pitched, short, and rather loud.
The bike still starts perfectly, but i feel that the starter motor is turning slower.

Is my starter on it's way out?

:) I had one go bad like that this year...and in the summer... ::)

Remove the starter...clean it out with a can of electrical cleaner and install new brushes. You may as well install a new nose oil seal while your in there mate... ;)

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA lets go again baby !!!!!!

Sometimes the starter clutch slips when Vs' are cold or have a weak battery, or a combination of the two.  It's usually an intermittent problem that makes a really scary shrill noise..  I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes a regular problem.  Then, the fix would be to replace the clutch rollers and springs.

Kiwi

that seems to describe the noise.  where can i find rollers and springs?

I would rebuild the starter clutch at the first sign of trouble , otherwise you may break the body and new rollers and springs wont help.

I think we've so far been blessed at the relative ease at obtaining replacement parts, but as these bikes approch 30 years old, i think it'd be wise to start doing what we can to conserve parts...

I'm trying to get a set of rings for a friends '78 CB750 , so far no  luck and they sold in quantity , unlike the Vision.

I may need some rings too, (for a 78 CB750)  but Im not at that point yet. Engine is apart so I could get there, I guess. Do you need more than 2 sets to purchase? Actually,, I think its earlier than 78.. I'll have to do some homework.

It was the starter itself.  Got it taken care of from a local place and it sounds much better.

No worries about the thread.

They replaced the brushes and re-wound the thingee ( i forgot the name of it ), and lubed where lube was needed.

it took them about 30 minutes.

The only thing they could rewind is the armature. that's the big shafted piece in the center with the wires wrapped around it.  no way they rewound that, & not in 30 mins with out specialised equipment anyway...  but as long as it works.
