I thought the wild west analogy was pretty good.   ;)  And why would I leave?  That's just silly. I think you may be projecting as to whose feelings are hurt.

There are some inaccuracies in your response but I don't feel it's worth pursuing. Just know I have absolutely no problem with anyone voicing their opinion and trust you feel the same.

I like the way that being religious and expecting even the kind of modesty that you could expect in just about any public place in my own country makes me a bad person.  For the record I just addblocked the images and stopped browsing the site from work.

What I find most disappointing (because offended is too strong of a word) is the thought of "I'm going to have my bit of fun even though I know it will gravely offend some people"  That I as a person am held in such low regard that it would not even worth making a small concession for the sake of harmony is a little sad.  That is part of polite society, not doing things that are perfectly acceptable back home for the sake of your current company just as a sign of respect.

I do choose to visit this site, and there is nothing in it's contents that is inappropriate for any of my surroundings.  If a contributor brings content to the site that then changes that it is not at all presumptuous to request a concession from them.  Not a venom spewing demand filled rant, just a polite request.  If that request is denied then they are asking me to bend to their will.  Someone has to bend, it's only a matter of who and how much.

So a small group of people can turn off the avatars of all 1,068 members and/or change their viewing habits on the site as a whole, or one person can pick another avatar of their choosing from a very slightly reduced set of options.  I don't see how that is an entirely unreasonable request.

I really like my avatar, but if someone complained to me that it was a great annoyance to them because it was flashing and animated I would just change it.  Because an avatar is no big deal, and I see no point in valuing it any more than that.

Extent,
How can you possibly accommodate to the morals and beliefs of all 1000 plus forum members if we were making small concessions for every persons feelings this forum would come to a grinding holt. Do you not think the diversity of members makes for a more interesting forum..

It's called a society, which includes working with a common subset of morals and beliefs.

Perhaps this is a good time to decide what boundaries we want as Riders of Vision. We Americans live in a richly diversified country culturally speaking. It seems to me that those on the edges of what is acceptable to the majority are the ones bringing about decreased freedoms for everyone whether it be at a national level or at a Vision motorcycle site. Diversity is fine when it doesn't disrupt the agreed on rules of a group,  I personally don't like moving avatars and I feel that avatars that distract with sexual content are even worse. That said, I like naked girls better than anyone here but I don't think we should use avatars to make statements as to our sexual preferences that might easily offend half the human race. I would like women to feel as welcome here as anyone else. Maybe a poll might help. JMO     BDC

I'd think the boundaries would be determined by the owner/admin - otherwise we'd be forever trying to come to a consensus. We may as well have a poll on who makes the best engine oil.  :D  And since the admin is clearly not responsible for removing the avatar I can only assume (yes, assume) it was but a minor computer glitch. Iain, I respect your choice and I know the other members do too. Please feel free to reload your avatar.

I thought the question at hand was "work safe" avatars?  If it's just a matter of turning off the avatars while at work (at lunch or breaks of course) and later unchecking the box, I don't think that's asking too much. If it's a matter of some members being "gravely" offended by some avatars, that certainly deserves a closer look. Maybe the poll should ask who is gravely offended just to get a handle on how deep this impacts the group? Iain, disregard my previous comment 'til we get this ironed out. Thanks pal.  :D

And I don't think it's asking too much to use work-safe avatars.

Why do we need light weight pornography on a forum dedicated to the best motorcycle that Yamaha ever built?

There are websites where one can look at pornography, dedicated to that subject.  Why bring it here to a site dedicated to motorcycles?  I am not a prude but some things are generally socially acceptable and others less so.  I have noticed the few ladies that were here are not here any more, the avatars in question may have had something to do with that.  Maybe, who knows.

How can you possibly accommodate to the morals and beliefs of all 1000 plus forum members if we were making small concessions for every persons feelings this forum would come to a grinding holt. Do you not think the diversity of members makes for a more interesting forum..

I don't know, I do it myself every day in both my professional and personal life.  Most of my friends and colleagues have different religious beliefs than I do, and almost all of them have different political beliefs.  I work for a Japanese company doing business in San Francisco as my day job.  In my animation team there are people living in Texas, New York, Florida, South Carolina, London, Taipei, Montréal, Toronto, and India.  I am still in contact with people I've worked with in the past that live in Poland, Columbia, Australia, Turkey, Sweden, the Dominican Republic, and Singapore, as well as just about any other state in the US you can think of.  Which isn't even to mention all the other people that I don't even know at all the other online communities that I am a part of.  I certainly don't feel that my life is any less colorful because I accommodate with things that are little things for me but a big deal for someone else.  On the contrary I find it very interesting to have put forward even the simplest consideration for another person with different beliefs rather than just being myself completely uninhibited and expecting every one else in the world to just deal with it.  I'm sure there are plenty of things about me that tick people off that I do unintentionally, I see no reason to do things intentionally that will even just annoy people on top of that.

This forum has been around for years working under exactly that same principal.  This is one of the most accepting and tolerant online communities I have ever known for sure.  We don't all think the same things (see: YICS :p ) but the results of that are quite plain to see, there is no grinding or halting involved.

I'm not saying that you have to not like naked ladies.  I'm not even saying that you have to not express yourself as an individual on this forum.  But there are ways that you can do that that do accommodate other people.  If it is really really important to you (not just acceptable) start a sexy lady thread in the general board.  I most certainly would prefer it if you didn't, but that would be a reasonably minded compromise in my mind.  In the end as long as the admin does not disapprove, those that wish to have no part of it can just not visit, and are not required to jump through technical hurdles or mass disable functionality that they would otherwise use.  And if it's not important to you then just don't bother.  I see no downsides, and unless you are such a one dimensional person that literally the only two aspects of your personality are visions and naked ladies, then you will still be meaningfully contributing to the diversity of the group with all the other things about you.  There are lots of things I do and things I'm interested in that I don't talk about on this forum, mostly because I think their too boring, but plenty because I feel they're just not relevant.  I don't feel the tiniest bit of loss because of that, or any less a part of the community.

I do want to make clear that I'm not trying to single anyone out here (as I mentioned before, as far as I was concerned I dealt with my issue weeks ago and had forgotten it) It's merely an extremely convenient example for the discussion.

Given the response to the 2 avatars in question it seems disingenuous to suggest a "sexy lady thread".  ???  But good luck with it.....  :)

No disrespect to the aggrieved but I never really had a strong feeling either way as to the demise of the avatars. I did however find this an interesting experiment in the tolerance (or lack thereof) of people. I kinda' hoped more would have participated to increase the data points as it were. Even so, the results seemed to fall in the range of expected human behavior.  :)   Save one response perhaps  :(

Disappointing to some degree is how they were removed. I have to assume, until corrected, that it was the admin and yet the aggrieved were not even sent a courtesy email as to the action and reason. I'd have to imagine the moderators(s) are/were privy to that action too? Lucky, as a moderator of the forum maybe you could address this?

I am not a moderator, never have been. there are no mods here, & I still believe we don't really need one. Just Ron who is the sole owner & admin. I suppose I would if asked.  seems a dispute once every 5 years would be a pretty cushy gig :)

And this is rather tame as far as Forum disputes go.  There must have been an issue back in 06 before I joined the forums, because this is the first time I've ever seen anything that could be viewed as anything be a discussion.

And to add to the thread, (and the statistics that Rikugun mentionned,)  I think Extent has expressed my view on the issue better than I ever could.  There is a time and a place for everything.  Bikes and bare chests seem to get along well in Daytona, but out of respect for the female members here, I think we should keep this forum "clean."  If I want to see naked women, there are plenty of other places to find that, and if I'm going to see a bared chest, it's much nicer when I can play a little    ;)

EDIT::  My grammar is terrible right now.

In my view there is nothing that goes together quite as well as bikes and boobs.  Perhaps that comes from growing up in a country with almost no nudity laws, almost no censorship, legalised prostitution and homosexuality, yet you will go to jail if you smack your kids,  America as far as I can gather is almost the exact opposite, where invading foreign countries and murdering the natives is supported by cheering and flag waving, where people wander round with handguns in their pockets, yet $20 for a kiss and a cuddle and you are off to prison.  No-one was ever hurt by looking at a nice pair of buttocks or breasts. Ever.

As for work-safe avatars, there is little more offensive to me than employees stealing from their employers by reading RoV when they should be working.  Is employee theft not part of this so called morality or decency that makes some of you gasp in horror when you see a perfectly formed chest.

I suspect that those who complain are merely embarrassed that they get a stiffy looking at Iain's avatar, but sadly not when they look at their wives.

If your eyes offend you, then pluck them out!
