There's a 99% chance you have DOT 3 in there if it hasn't been opened in a while.  The best course is just to drain all the fluid, replace with new and bleed.  About a 30 minute job, and you have all new fluid.

And you can use DOT 3 or 4, doesn't matter really. If you're a purist, use 3. I had an unopened bottle of 4 when I did mine so that is what I used. Just a note though, if you have container of either that has been unsealed and has been around for more that a few weeks, don't use it in your brake system. It absorbs water from the air and you do not want water in your brake system. You can use the old stuff for washing seals when you do a brake job.
