So as I am waiting on funds for more parts I've been taking off more and more items and am almost down to just frame. Since I am this far into it I figure I'll sand and paint the frame as it has a lot of rust spots. I was wondering how much paint would it take to complete this if anyone has done it. Gonna use POR and Black Cote and don't want to get way more than needed.

I did the exact same thing a few years ago (on a different '82 Yamaha). I cannot recall the exact amount of POR that I used, but I do know that the mix-pack I bought was plenty. And the mix-pack is nice because you can keep the extra cans in your freezer for later.

I bought 3 of gray POR and 3 of black-cote in my mix-pack. I bought the gray POR so that I could make sure I covered it completely with the black-cote. It was almost indistinguishable from the sandblasted frame, so I'd get a different color POR if I were to do it again. Don't they make a white?

It's great stuff, one of the few products I swear by. Good luck!

Sand blasting and powder coating is he best way to go.
Sand basting get into all the corners where sand paper can't get to.
Powder paint puts paint back into corners where brushes find difficult to reach.

I actually thinned mine and sprayed it from an HVLP gun. The difficulty wasn't tight corners as much as "blind spots" where there's no good angle to spray from. I was happy with how it turned out though.

If I had it down to bare metal again, I'd look into chrome plating :)

i use a product called XO Rust on all my frames. You get it clean and sanded and just brush it on! Yup brush it. It is an oil based rust proof paint that dries as hard as powdercoat in two days. It self smooths and looks killer. Nice thing is that it is $10 a qt and will do 10-12 frames per qt! in one coat each. and it comes in like 15 diff colors! Jon

Ya powdercoat is the way to go but I don't want to spend 350 dollars as that was the cheapest quote I got.
