Gonna bend my pipe...or tube maybe?

Hi all. Got a cheap pipebender for Father's Day (had to buy myself) and finally got around to using it with bad results. Tried bending 1" tube 2mm wall thickness filled with packed sand and it squashed and creased it. Realized that the forming dies are for pipe which is measured in internal diameter where tube is measured in external diameter, so the best former was several mm to wide allowing tube to spread out whilst bending. Thought about bending 1" pipe and cutting in half and using as insert to forming die but think this would reduce die sidewall height to much to be effective. Any thoughts?
Apologies if not making much sense. I'm celebrating my 43rd birthday by myself (wife in bed for early start) with my 10th can of bourbon. BTW if you have not tried Billy Maverick it's quite good stuff!   :P
