I'll agree it will pump enough to put some pressure on the line without the engine running or turning over. A mechanical pump starts to work as soon as you start cranking the engine over to start it.

If it has been more than a week or 2 since the engine was last run, the first minute or so of cranking will be the mechanical pump filling the float bowls enough for the fuel to get to the cylinders. The electric pump fills the bowls in about 3 seconds, less wear and tear on the starter. But if you don't like electric pumps, you are not convinced and nothing I say will change your mind.

They both have good and bad points. You've mentioned the good points of electric. If either fails it's electrical or mechanical  operation they are both out of the game. If the battery is dead they are both out of the game but if those float bowls are empty, and the battery is dead you can start the bike/car on compression. It's kind of like a electric starter and a kick starter. For a while some bikes came with both.

If all else fails, make certain that there is at least a gallon of gas in the tank, put the fuel petcock in the "PRI" position, wait 2 minutes, and declare Victory.  Don't ever use the starter motor to indirectly fill the carb floats.
