'83 Air Duct levers

I've got an 83 V & both the levers (or handles or whatever you want to call them) for the hot/cool air ducts in the fairing broke off within about 2 weeks of each other. The base plate for these levers is riveted onto the inside moveable panel so I'm not sure how to get the plates off without damaging the panel. Anybody have any suggestions on a replacement or a simple fix-it set up? Now when I'm riding it just blows "cool" air which is great for the summer but when cool weather rolls around I'd like to be able to heat it up.
