Bought a Vision
« on: November 27, 2002, 06:50:58 PM »
Picked up the Vision I bought on ebay.  Disappointments: this thing is leaking oil everywhere, exhausts rusted although I was told they were fine, petcock leaking, fork seals bad.  Good things: charges, little or no corrosion in electrical connections and fuse box, almost new metzler tires.  Ok, now the questions.  Is it just easier to buy gasket material and permatex (or yamahabond4) and make all the gaskets I'll need or spend potentially over $100 on gaskets?  Valve cover gaskets, spend $26 each or try to reuse with silicon or something.  They are leaking pretty bad.  I found a petcock rebuild kit, but if the diaphram is good, looks like I just need a couple of o rings.  Anything particularly tough about doing the fork seals?  I've found a clutch cable on bikebandit, but no throttle cable.  Any ideas, the one on it is ok, but I'd like to have a back up.  The bike starts and runs but will not run with the choke off no matter how warm it is.  I knew going in I'd be rebuilding the carbs, so that's no big deal.  Has anyone tried any other Yamaha down draft carbs, Venture or FZ?  What do you think about these replacement mufflers at JCWhitney?  http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=57405&FID=326&BQ=mot  Well looks like I have a winter project.

HI RobTx,  I make all my gaskets ( you can get a gasket hole punch set at  Harbor frieght, 5.95)  I was under the impression that the valve cover gaskets were reusable , but if your going to coat them with anything, use Copper Coat . DONOT use RTV as it will turn snotty in a short time .  your can probably find new O rings for the petcock (I did)  As to the fork seals, I get mine at a bearing mart  (8.00 and change for the pair, YIC want's 38.00 a pair)  you will need  a 17mm " allen" wrench  ( VW drain plug wrench, at any auto parts store 5.95) By the way get a Haynes manual, yer gonna need it. Your local  M/C  shop can order a after market throttle cable from Tucker Rocky . Forget about the JC Whitney mufflers, they won't work (without a lot of fabricating and welding)  Just stick your head under the bike and look up, in front of the rear wheel those are not "mufflers " it an exaust system !  I have a spare if you need it. I don't think its worth the trouble  to try other carbs  (unless you are very experienced in setting up bike carbs) By spring you will have all of this knocked and be ready to ride.

the exhaust will be yyour bigest problem. Yamaha wants $400 for a replacement system IF it's still ava.  Mac of canada makes a replacement set for under $200, but they are LOUD
preditor makes a replacement system , full stainless steel, also pricey, see Rons site for more info, MIVV in Itialy makes replacement mufflers, also SS they are a cut & weld deal.

or you can "roll your own", which i.m planning to do, but for the last 2 years i've just patched 'em,

there are no rebuild kits for the carbs, just replace the gaskets (make 'em) CLEAN them (Berrymans dip) and sync them, you should be fine.

Thanks for the replies Lucky and Rick.  I've started the bike but it won't really run without choke no matter how how warm the motor.  I've rebuilt dozens of carbs (bike and auto) so I don't anticipate any problems.  Berryman's is the best.  I've read everything on your page Lucky and think nothing is beyond my ability.  The charging system seems ok (13.7-14.1 volts at idle), all connections are clean without corrosion and all electrical accessories and lights are fine.  The exhaust will pass inspection for now, something to worry about for the future.  Already ordered the seals from a place for $11, so that's on it's way.  Thanks for the lead on the throttle cable, mine is ok, but I'd like to replace it along with the clutch cable.  Tank is in ok shape and has been kreemed, so no worries there for the time being.  Valve cover gaskets leaking are a big thing, I don't think copper coat will do it, but I haven't looked close at them yet, could just be not torqued enough.  Looking forward to getting it on the road again, as I posted before, I had a Vision in the mid eighties so this is a return visit for me.  :)

Hopefully you noted the warning on my site about adding Berrymans to a kreem'd tank, you don't want to end up with a kreemed carb...

I did see that Lucky, thanks for the reminder.  I've read so much in the last few days, hard to absorb it all.  I have your site bookmarked, so I'll be there often I imagine.

If you ever get a message that the site is 'temporarily unavailable' it means there have been too many hits in an hour.  being free webspace, they limit me to the amount of traffic i'm allowed, so just try back again after an hour or so. It typicly happens after i've been crawled by a search engine.

As you now know, the trottle cable for the '82 model is no longer listed as available, but the '83 is and it fits and works.  I would recommend it over having a local shop "build" a cable using the old housing.  I had one made and it did not last.  Good luck and enjoy the bike once you have the problems sorted out.

HI DirtyBike, You had it made by the wrong mechanic!  I'll build one and guarentee the you can not pull the ends off.  It will be made of all new materials. I'll have to work up a price.

Lucky, do you happen to remember any contact information for MAC of Canada as you mentioned in this old post?
