How far CAN the starterclutch bolts stick out of the rotor housing  before they contact the stator?  The bolts I have stick out about 5 or 6 threads above the surface.  Do I absolutely HAVE to cut them down to 2 threads?

By the way, my old starter clutch bolts were THRASHED!!  They were worn smooth all the way to the last two or three threads at the tip, and one was sheared clear off.   Good thing I already had to crack the case for the stator.

Thanks guys.  :)

im not the pro here but mine are about 4 or 5 threads out and it has been fine

Just be sure to peen them over. those bolts are REALLY hard, so a neat trick is to cut a slot in them with a dremil tool fitted with a cut off wheel, then once the bolts are installed, split them open with a cold chisel.
don't forget the locktite red.

Well, I did end up cutting them off with a hacksaw, then did kind of a cross-hatch sort of peening with a cold chisel.  I'm sure that will hold them...    But I did only use blue locktite, not red.  Do you suppose I will someday regret that?

peening is the importaint part, red locktite is just insurance...
