Sorry to start a new topic as this is really a reply to "Failte" at

but I want this to be easier to find in a search.

I am W*A*Y behind updating the ignition FAQ.? Apologies.? BUT... I have gotten some good feedback from some folks who have rebuilt TCI's from other bikes? (based on the info they had found here).

SO... in short:

- The BU806 mentioned in the FAQ is a bad choice and should not be used. Sorry if ANYONE wasted time on that.? This was based on some recommendations made to me years ago that have since proved false.

- The NTE2317 is a better choice and should be tried.

- The MJE5742? (or MJE5740)

? ?I? got this email about a year ago:

I have read your instructions on fixing Yamaha TDI units with glee, since I have been long searching for information on the control box for my 1988 VX250. However, I believe I have stumbled upon a more suitable replacement for the T-220 footprint NPN Darlington power transistors used in my box.
Using this device will be a simple swap, rather than requiring shoehorning the larger T-18 size devices you list. Hopefully this information can help others. This device is readily available for $1.60 each from Digi-Key (www.Digi-Key.com), with no minimum order.

Obviously, this sounds GREAT.? The To220 size would be a direct replacement of what is in the Vision TCI.? The NTE2317 is a size TO218 which is slightly bigger and would require a re-wired plugin.
