My XZ400 has a brass screw at the bottom on the right hand side.

It screws in and out but I can't remove it. Is this the pilot screw, if not is it important. I can't get the bike to run below 2 - 3,000 rpm without cutting out.

I've got the carbs off again and sprayed carb cleaner everywhere but I keep reading about adjusting the pilot screws.

It is the pilot screw. The reason you can not get it out is the o-ring. I will look at my notes and let you know how many turns out it should be to start with. I do remember they are different from front and back carbs.

Euro 550's are 2.5/2.5     This is a 400.

2.5/2.5 is probably a good starting point to get the carbs sync'd and to start from

Found my notes. The front is 3 turns out from lightly seated and the rear is 4&1/4 from lightly seated. I got these when I took apart the carbs from a low milage  bike. I had to remove the factory seals to get to the srews.
Don't forget to sync the carbs,( it is easier if you cap off the yics).
