FINALLY!!!
It went pretty well I guess.  It took a long time.  Apparently there were some unexpected things.  Lots of blood clots and a mild infection.  They put in two permanent screws and a temporary pin, rather than three temporary pins because the breaks were more severe than they had thought.  Plus lots of stiches to close all the incisions.  I haven't seen my foot yet, and if it looks as bad as it feels, then I have one horrific looking foot!  They put me on some antibiotic that I take every 6hrs, which is good because I had swollen glands and a fever that have both gone down a bit.  All in all I guess it went well, it's my first surgery (other than wisdom teeth) so I don't have any basis for comparison.  I guess being at home and able to function somewhat just one day after is a good thing.

Hey P-Rex,
You now have "Braggin' rites"...War wounds to show your family and friend's...and maybe one day...grandchildren!!!... ;D ;D ;D

Got to admit I was reeeeeally pleased when they removed my pin...all 18 inches of it... :o.

Permanent pin's/screw's are a bit of a bugger tho' at the airport... ;)

:) Good to "hear" your home and in good spirits. Don't try and rush anything...the healing process takes a wee bit of time and patience. Best of luck... 8)

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA lets go again baby !!!!!!

'82 Vision, Pearl Orange finish, lots of up-grades!!!

P-REX,
Welcome to the world of medical metal. I also have a few parts that I wasn't born with. All in all I get around pretty well, it really gets to be a pain when it gets cold.
   Glad you are OK.
Use the time off to get your new Vision ready for the road.
Doctors are just flesh mechanics, if you ask them why they did what they did, it will sound like an engineer talking.
You wil  heal, and yes you will have problems at the airport.
Don ;)

Glad you are finally truly on the mend!  Orthopedics is the area of medicine I really have quite a bit of faith in.  Most other medical fields seem to be mainly pill pushers.  Dad was on 2 medications before he broke his hip.  At one point this summer, he was on 10 different drugs.  We got a lot of that straightened out & he should be back down to 3 after he sees his normal doctor tomorrow.  Seems like the specialists that all saw dad for his various problems this summer didn't talk to each other - just prescribed a new drug & billed Medicare a few thousand dollars each.  What a scam.  Probably got $$ kickbacks from the drug companies to write the scripts as well.  (As you can tell, my impression of most 'modern medicine' is not the best.  No offense meant to anyone in the medical field.)

At least you're still young & should heal fast.  Keep us informed of your progress!

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

Glad to hear you are OK Rex... I have a freind who was hit by a tow truck..(while walking.. roughly 10 years ago) He has lots of non stock parts in his legs and feet... he works on his feet all day and  just bought a dirt bike!

I think this would be a good place to discuss boots.... my cycle boots don't look any tougher than Rex's cowboy boots were.... What do you guys recommend ???

Anything armored will help.  Look for a good fit.  I got the AlpineStar SMX-4s because they are made for wide, high volume feet.  They're a little toward the race side but much more comfortable than full race boots.  Most motorcycle boots are made for narrower feet so if you have a wide foot, your options are more limited.

Check out the fit descriptions on the www.NewEnough.com site.  They get the fit pretty accurate.  I tried on some Sidis & Joe Rockets.  Neither was wide enough until I got into ones about 3 sizes too long.

Standard touring boots are OK, but the ones geared for more track time will have more armor in them.  Most full race boots are $250+ - the AlpineStars I got were more like $180.

Still, a direct impact on the foot between a car bumper & the bike, I doubt anything would totally prevent a serious injury.  Somehing with very stiff soles may help.  Just a thought . . ..

A couple problems with cowboy boots - the slick leather soles will slide on oily pavement often encountered at intersections & parking areas.  Also, many leather types used in them are "fashion grade" leather which will not hold up as well as the leathers / synthetics used in dedicated motorcycle boots.

Hope this helps a little.

good to hear you are on right road now rex---- i have quite a few non issue parts(thanks Uncle Sam) only real problems come from airports and courthouses, but other than work, i avoid them as much as possible. but , if is any help, have your ortho doc write a document, pointing out each non human part, ,type location and material- he has a list already- and take it with you when you fly- will reduce likelyhood of those , uh,, uncomfortable delays in getting past min wage radar hacks .
keep your bike running, your beer cold ,and your passport handy.all are like money in the bank .
