I haven't sold my vision yet. I had one guy come look at it. Luckily, I showed up at the storage facility 1/2 hour before to get it running and warmed up! It's stored in an unheated warehouse.

It was about 35 degrees out and I swear it took 5 full minutes of cranking the throttle, choking and pushing the starter button to get it to run. She fires and runs from a second and then dies. I have to repeat that process about 30 times before it'll actually start and run on its own.

Once it is warmed up it starts and runs great! Like a new bike! Are all visions so tough to start in the cold?

Now I see why the previous owner hooked this cold starting hose up! Next time I'm gonna spray a shot of starting fluid in it and see what happens.

My experiance is that the longer the perioud of time a V has not been ran, the harder that first start. And then cold temps multiply the time it takes for that first start. A V ran day after day will not have the same problem.

Sorry, no solution, they just don't like to sit around!

I find going to a 10W-whateveryoulike oil helps alot

YellowJacket!

A fully charged battery helps a lot too.

:) When she has been stood for a while, switch petcock to "PRIME" for a few minute's, set choke and fire up... ;)

I strongly concur with this!

My last vision would start right up if i followed this formula. Turn on prime, choke it, twist the throttle three full times, wait thirty seconds- start. Granted I kept it on a battery charger and threw in iridium plugs but once i did that I never had problems with a cold start

All engines require a richer mixture when starting them cold.  Many small equipment engines (mowers & snowblowers for example) have a primer bulb to put raw fuel into the carb.  The Vision uses the "choke" circuit to perform a similar function.  I've started mine in temps as low as 20F.  It always takes some throttle twists when temps drop below 45F.  The colder the ambient air, the more throttle twists.  I also use the "Prime" setting and full "choke".  Mine lives on a battery tender too, but I use the standard NGK plugs.

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

I've been running Mobil One 0-40w synthetic and found it makes a big difference in cold starts.
Seems to work better in hot weather also.
My cold start routine is to put on the trickle charger about two hours before attempting to turn it over.
Make sure the tank is not low. Turn the petcock to prime and wait a minute or two before pumping the throttle a couple of times.
Turn on the choke and it will usually start in a few revolutions.
Sometimes takes a few tries.
If it won't start its usually because the battery is to low and the starter is draining all the available electrons.
Then I jump it which usually gives immediate results because all the other attempts have got it completely primed.
I have experienced tremendous backfires from trying to start it to long and loading up the exhaust with unburned gas. Sounds like a 375 mag and scares the bejesus out of me. Suprised the neighbors haven't complained.
Also glad the exhaust hasn't blown up.

I found out my "new" bike will start in 14 degree cold after sitting for weeks.  :o I did have to hook up the jumper cables though. I ended up selling it recently.  :-\ I decided I couldn't stand the comfort level of the gsxr. I'm too old for that scrunched up riding position. I'm on the prowl for a big bore sport tourer now.

Try the V-strom 1000. Makes a good two up tourer and you can keep the V love! ;D

82 with fairing, rejetted, 83 turbo seca fork and brakes coming whenver I acquire the rest of the parts, and she stops breaking long enough to be in the garage for an upgrade instead of a repair.

ps2/bikevision

i think i can remember several posts on this very same subject. and if i remember right, the conclusion was that the vision is like a woman waiting for you to pick her up. if you let her sit, she wont want to start. if she is cold, she really wont want to start. and if she has been sitting in the cold, well you better bring flowers aka. jumper cables, and heat.

i have found that a forced air heater blowing on the engine for awhile before you try to start helps alot.

I decided to ride the bike to the forward air terminal instead of trailering it. Dumb move! It was 8 degrees out with a wind chill advisory. I forgot my fullface helmet so I had to borrow a friends open face.  :-\ In the last pic I had to pull over on the highway because my face was so cold. I could hardly move my mouth!  :o
