Night Vision

you might try:

rocking the bike back and forth in a high gear (like 4th or 5th.) to "wake the starter"

....or you can try wacking it with a stick, 2x4, or a rock if you really want to get it's attention...
that might wake it up....

if it does "wake up"... you'll probably want to break it down and at least clean it out.......
if it doesn't "wake up"... you'll probably want to break it down and at least clean it out.......
if it ain't worth doing it the hard way....

How many miles on the bike?

Your next moves:  Study the archives under "starter"............Clean the oil out of the brush area of the starter......Replace the starter brushes............Replace the starter oil seal with the spring lip design oli seal.

13,000+

Replaced the starter approximately 2,000 miles ago.

O.K.  I'll try to clean it and replce the items you said.

Thanks..

A little hope, after you remove your starter brush plate, take it to a local automotive starter & alternator repair shop and ask them to replace the brushes.  Should cost no more $20.00.

When you replaced the starter, did you put in a brand new one or a used one?

O.K.  Thanks...

A new one.

don't assume that since the starter is new (NOS?) it has the spring seal...

Lucky is absolutely correct.  If you installed a brand new, out of the Yamaha box, starter, its entirely possible that its oil seal has failed.  Yamaha messed up and specified the wrong starter design for its under oil application.  In all likelyhood, the V starter part number will get you a brand new copy of the wrong design.  But, the good news is that if the seal has failed and oil soaked the brushes,  there is a very good chance that with only 2k miles on the starter, the brushes can be salvaged with a thourough cleaning without having to even disassemble the brush plate.  Brake system and electrical contact cleaner are the tools of choice.

Of course, regardless of the bush salvage attempt out come,  the oil seal must be replaced with a spring seal design.
