As it turned out, I did not get around to doing the valve adjust until this past May.  What I did with the RTV is use it to make the OEM gasket (reused) stick in the groove of the cover.  Then put a thin film of the RTV on the flat of the head.  I ended up having the cover off 3 more times, when the head cover bolts broke the threads loose from the fittings on the cam  journals.  I ended up putting helicoils in ALL of the fittings.  The RTV held the gasket in the cover, and I reapplied it each time on the flats of the head, no leaks and no squeeze-out.  Oh, and I repainted the head cover after treating it with oven cleaner.
