Just another newbie to the family.  I have 2 visions (without the full blessing from the wife).  One, "Candy" ran until the starter clutch went out on it a few weeks ago.  The second (No name yet but she is red too) I just bought last week from Cervezaking with second gear out.  I am in the process of taking the starter clutch out of #2 and putting it in Candy.  I bought an engine from a guy in Austin for $100 that will go in #2 so long as I can figure out how.

I'm not much of a gear head but I like to turn bolts and get a little oily.

#2 needs: seal the gas tank, a new (maybe i should say: different) engine, clean the carbs for starters.  It was a working machine until I took the starter clutch.  I hope to have it running in a couple of months  :o.  Maybe a little ambitious but I gotta try.

I look forward to my new V Fam

Welcome to the wonderful world of vision ownership!  Hopefully you will soon be a Rider of Vision instead of a Rider with Vision!!!   ;D

You don't need to replace an entire engine just to fix a starter clutch.  Why does the second V need an engine?  You said it was running until you robbed it's starter clutch.  I gather there's something else wrong with that one?

If you have an accident on a motorcycle, it's always your fault. Tough call, but it has to be that way. You're in the right, and dead -on a bike. The principle is not to have any accident. If you're involved in an an accident, it's because you did not anticipate. Then, by default, you failed.

 :) H2O, try it this way... ;)

CJ, Don't worry about not being a "gear head"...with a wee bit of help from the "family" you will be, soon... :D :D... 8)

Got it - thanks guys.  Didn't read it all as carefully as I should have.  Just went back to the second part of the post instead of re-reading the earlier full description.

After re-re-reading it, it sounds like Cervezaking has his second gear out.   ;D  :D  ;)

yep, I bout #2 from cervezaking last week.

last night i moved the starter clutch from #2 to Candy.  just waiting on the gasket now.  Candy was a "rider" until the starter clutch gremlin.

I ordered in a 'new' key ignition on ebay because the key was permanently misplaced on #2.  When I took off the key ignition I found numbers on the back (B233110).  I assume this is the key number.  Can Yamaha cut another key from those numbers?

thanks in advance

Probably not , but you might try a lock shop.

I'll give that a try.  Thanks Rick

#2 has some road rash on it.  Last night I was taking the gauges off and when I looked in, the back is all cracked up.  There are a couple of Gauges on Ebay for $75 plus shipping.  That is a little out of my budget (wife imposed  >:( )  Is it possible to put on an 83 gauge on the 82.  I know there is the issue of gas gauge on the 83.  Has anyone figured out how to put the gas tank sending unit on an 82?  Thanks in advance.

I looked into altering an 82 tank for a fuel sender.  It can be done but you need to find a sender that fits.  The ones from 83s are RARE!

83 gauges are a direct swap - except for one slightly different connector.  With some studying of the wiring diagram & swapping one plastic plug on the 83 set from one off your 82, it will plug right in.  Some of the wire colors for the tach are different and the fuel sender wire isn't present in the 82 harness (that's why you need to change the plug).  I am currently running an 83 gauge set with the fuel gauge disconnected - at least until I get my 83 tank de-dented & painted.

As for 82 gauge parts - what exactly is broken?  I have some gauges that the speedo & tach don't work, but the housing & inner plastic piece is usable.  Let me know what you need & I might be able to supply the parts.

I haven't gone all the way into the gauge unit but so far it is white plastic at the back.  I think everything else works despite it being broken and cracked.  Is there a way to test the speed and RPM gauges without starting the engine?

thanks

The tach is electronic and probably can't be tested off the bike . The speedo is mechanical and can be tested with some thing like a bicycle spoke , with the "hook" cut off and the end ground to a square, like the end of a cable core. Insert this in the drill and turn it on , I don't remember if it ccw or cw , but it it doesn't read , try reversing the drill.  The white part is the speedo body , you might try repairing it with some JB weld before testing it.

To make the speedo work correctly you have to have your drill turn CCW.  If you turn your drill CW then the speedo needle will not move but the odometer will get younger if you keep at it. :P  I know this from a little experience. ::)

If I spin the drill real fast will the bike time warp backwards to brand new? ;D

You can actually test the tach. You have to apply 12 volts then zero in a rythmic fashion just like the spark signal for the cylinder. Just kinda "diddle" it with a jump box, it should work fine like that :)

Thanks Cathode

Life started happening again and so I had to put my Visions on the back burner.  Hoping to test the tack and get Candy going today.

Wish me luck. ::)
