Have just replaced the stator and starter oil seal, but didn't look to see how thew oil level window worked when I had the cover off. Is there a float in the window, or are we just looking at the actual oil in the bottom of the rotor case?
Thanks.

Actual oil - with a plate behind it
The window and plate can both get pretty dirty and hard to see the actual oil.

Next time you take the cover off, you can clean in there with a cotton bud

Roro, that's actually a great tip and doesn't take much time if the cover is allready off for other reasons. It seems to me at least one member needlessly lunched a good motor after assuming a dark window equals a full crankcase.  :(

Easy to do if you are new to motorcycles

To get a better understanding about how the concept works, have an assistant hold the bike and let it lean to the right while you observe the oil level drop in the window.  Then bring the bike back to center and watch the oil level (hopefully) rise.
